No. 4 Men’s Golf claims third at Valspar Collegiate Invitational

PALM CITY, Fla. — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team fired a final-round team score of 14-under 270 on Tuesday to finish in third place against an elite field in the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at Floridian National Golf Club. Senior Luke Potter carded a 4-under 67 in the final round to tie for 10th in the individual standings with a 54-hole score of 10-under 203 (67-69-67).
In Tuesday's final round, Texas counted scores from Potter (4-under 67), sophomore Daniel Bennett (4-under 67), senior Tommy Morrison (3-under 68) and graduate Matt Comegys (3-under 68) for a team score of 14-under 270.
No. 11 Texas Tech claimed the team championship with a three-round score of 45-under 807 (273-267-267), while No. 2 Auburn placed second at 39-under 813 (264-274-275). The Longhorns finished third at 34-under 818 (268-280-270), one stroke in front of No. 6 Arkansas in fourth at 33-under 819 (270-280-269). The 16-team field featured four squads in the top 10 and nine teams in the top 25 of the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (March 6).
Ryder Cowan of Oklahoma (65-68-65) and Florida State's Tyler Weaver (65-66-67) both recorded 54-hole totals of 15-under 198, but Weaver claimed medalist honors after winning the first hole of a playoff. A group of four golfers tied for third at 13-under 200, including Auburn's Cayden Pope (67-67-66), Gerardo Gomez of Arkansas (67-69-64), Texas A&M's Wheaton Ennis (67-69-64) and Ben Gregg of Texas Tech (68-66-66).
Texas returns to action when it competes at The Ford Collegiate on April 13-14 (Monday-Tuesday) in Richmond Hill, Ga. That event will mark the final regular-season event of the year, as the Longhorns will then begin postseason play at the SEC Championship on April 22-26 at Saint Simons Island, Ga.

- Senior Luke Potter carded a 4-under 67 on Tuesday to tie for 10th in the individual standings with a 54-hole score of 10-under 203 (67-69-67). Starting on hole 1 in his final round, Potter was 2-over at the turn before posting six birdies on the back nine (holes 10, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 18) to record his 4-under 67. This marked his fourth top-10 individual performance in eight events this season.
- Senior Tommy Morrison fired a 3-under 68 in his final round to tie for 17th with a three-round total of 8-under 205 (68-69-68). Starting on hold 2 on Tuesday, Morrison tallied six birdies (holes 3, 5, 6, 10, 13 and 17) against three bogeys to register his 3-under 68.
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett posted a 4-under 67 on Tuesday to tie for 19th with a 54-hole score of 7-under 206 (67-72-67). Starting on hole 3 in his final round, Bennett was 2-over through his first seven holes before rallying to produce six birdies on the back nine (holes 10, 11, 12, 13, 15 and 17) to finish out his 4-under 67.
- Senior Christiaan Maas carded a 2-over 73 in his final round to tie for 30th with a three-round score of 4-under 209 (66-70-73). Starting on hole 1 on Tuesday, Maas recorded three birdies (holes 5, 7 and 13) in his final round.
- Graduate Matt Comegys fired a 3-under 68 on Tuesday to tie for 51st with a 54-hole total of even-par 213 (71-74-68). Starting on hole 4 in his final round, Comegys tallied five birdies (holes 4, 5, 7, 14 and 15) against two bogeys to post his 3-under 68.
