AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 20 Texas (13-4, 7-0 Big 12) swept the doubles session and captured five of six singles matches en route to its fifth consecutive win, as the Longhorns remained unbeaten in conference play with a 6-1 victory over Kansas (7-11, 3-5) Friday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
"Everyone played very well for us today, and I'm happy with the performances," UT coach Patty Fendick-McCain said. "These ladies are doing everything they can to put themselves in a position to win. They are competing well. They have been able to perform and execute every weekend."
Texas nailed down the doubles point with victories at the third and second positions before completing a sweep of the doubles session at the first slot. Sophomore Stephanie Davison (Port Orchard, Wash.) and freshman Caroline Larsson (Sodertalje, Sweden) opened with an 8-2 defeat of Magdalena Tokarczyk and Maria Martinez at third doubles, and UT clinched the doubles point when freshman Maggie Mello (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and senior Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) scored an 8-5 win at second doubles over Lauren Hommell and Kunigunda Dorn.
Sophomore Vanja Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and junior Marija Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario) finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win over Elizaveta Avdeeva and Edina Horvath at the first slot.
Sophomore Sarah Lancaster pushed the Texas lead to 2-0 with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 victory over KU's Hommell at fifth singles, and Zauft and Corovic quickly followed with straight-set victories at positions two and one, respectively, to close out the Texas win. Zauft topped Horvath by a 6-1, 6-1 count at second singles, and Corovic was victorious over Tokarczyk by the same count at first singles.
Mello added a 6-4, 6-0 win at sixth singles over Stephanie Smith, and Davison outlasted Dorn in a third-set match tiebreak at third singles, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4), to stake Texas to a 6-0 lead. Finally, Kansas' Yuliana Svistun topped UT's Larsson in a three-set match at fourth singles that spanned nearly three hours. Svistun prevailed, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (10-7).
"I was especially pleased with Caroline Larsson's effort," Fendick-McCain said. "She might have been down a set and 5-0 in the second, and it ultimately didn't go her way, but she showed a lot of toughness out there to keep that match going."
Texas wraps up its weekend action on Sunday, April 13 when it hosts Kansas State at noon Central at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
