AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns left 12 runners stranded and dropped a 6-1 decision to the Baylor Bears in Big 12 Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The first inning foreshadowed things to come as the Longhorns left the bases loaded in the home half of the frame. Texas (28-19, 11-12 Big 12) also left two runners on base in the third, fifth and eighth innings.
Both squads starters cruised through the first six innings unscathed before UT's Austin Wood was touched up for a leadoff home run in the seventh. Adam Hornung hit a 2-2 pitch over the fence in leftfield to snap a streak of 30.1 consecutive innings in which Longhorns' pitchers had gone without yielding an earned run. The rally continued as Aaron Miller was hit by a pitch and with one out, Ben Booker delivered a first-pitch offering into the Texas bullpen down the rightfield line, inflating the Baylor cushion to 3-0. The Horns' relievers walked the bases loaded and a sacrifice fly by Beamer Weems capped off the rally, giving the Bears a 4-0 advantage.
Texas trimmed the lead to 4-1 with a run in the eighth. Russell Moldenhauer hit a leadoff single and was replaced at first by pinch runner Runey Davis. Brandon Belt singled to leftfield and Preston Clark walked to load the bases with no outs, but the Longhorns managed just one run as Tant Shepherd hit a sacrifice fly and David Hernandez and Michael Torres each grounded out to end the inning.
Baylor (28-21, 10-13) tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth when Dustin Dickerson hit a two-run single through the right side giving the Bears a 6-1 edge.
The win snapped an 11-game winning streak in the series for the Longhorns dating back to the 2005 Big 12 Conference Championship.
Wood (3-3) was saddled with the loss for Texas. He allowed three runs on six hits over 6.1 innings.
Shawn Tolleson (5-3) earned the win for Baylor, yielding one run on seven hits and six walks while striking out seven over 7.1 innings. Willie Kempf earned his first career save, retiring all five batters he faced over 1.2 innings
Brandon Belt led Texas hitters, going 2-for-4.
Shaver Hansen and Hornung each had two hits for Baylor.
Texas and Baylor wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk.
