AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas senior defender Stephanie Logterman scored twice to lead the Longhorns past Samford, 4-0, Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Freshmen Courtney Goodson and Amanda Lisberger also found the back of the net in their UT debut.
UT's offensive attack started in the 10th minute when Goodson dribbled her way around two Samford defenders at the top of the box before sending the ball through the hands of Bulldog keeper Alyssa Whitehead for her first career goal.
Just 20 minutes later, Logterman, in her first game back since the middle of the 2007 season, found the right side of the net to give the Horns the 2-0 advantage in the 33rd minute. UT controlled the majority of the first half, firing nine shots to Samford's one.
The Horns carried their offensive output into the second half as they spent the 45-minute period putting the pressure on the Samford defense. In the 59th minute Logterman brought the ball up the right line and sent it to Goodson who found Lisberger at the top of the box. The freshman's first shot bounced off Samford's keeper and Lisberger was left wide open in front of the net for the score.
Logterman took advantage of the ailing Bulldog defense just two minutes later for her second goal of the game. Freshmen Kylie Doniak and Goodson combined for the assist to give the senior her first career multi-goal game.
The Horns first road test of the season is up next, as they face the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. Central.
POSTGAME QUOTES
Head coach Chris Petrucelli
On the team's performance: I thought we controlled the ball pretty well. We were able to sort of dictate the pace of the game. We scored a couple of good goals and I think the quality of our finishing was pretty good. I was glad to see that when we created chances we got a lot of stuff on goal which is always good to see.
On Stephanie Logterman's performance: She was good tonight and she'll still get better. She is still not quite clean, but she was dangerous running up and down the flank and she is going to be a handful for anybody we play.
On the freshmen: I thought the freshmen were great. It was their first real game and their first home game. Coco [Courtney Goodson] started off with a great strike on that goal that she scored and then Amanda [Lisberger] has shown that when she comes in the game she changes the game.
Senior defender Stephanie Logterman
On her first game back after an injury and scoring two goals: Courtney [Goodson] make that second goal really easy, I just kind of stood there and let it hit off my foot really. My knee felt great though. I didn't play as well as I would have liked, but you can't really ask for more than two goals.
On her new role as a forward: It's a lot of fun. I still drop back and play defense, but that is because it is a deferent role and I'm used to being defensive minded. It's a change of pace, but it is a lot of fun and I am enjoying it so far.
On how the team played as a whole tonight: I thought we played really well as a team tonight. Obviously since it is the first game of the season there is room for improvements, but it was awesome to have a 4-0 win for our home opener. I think we'll just get better from here.
Freshman midfielder Amanda Lisberger
On scoring a game in her first game for the Longhorns: It was amazing. It was so much fun just being out here and playing with everyone. Everyone is very supportive even if you mess up they have your back. It was great. The goal was from Courtney [Goodson], she hit the split and I just saw the goalie and tried to get it over her.
