Tresselt notches win and save as Softball sweeps twin bill from UTEP

EL PASO, Texas -- Texas junior righthander Erin Tresselt earned a save and a win as the Texas Softball team swept its doubleheader with UTEP, 6-4 and 7-6 on Saturday evening. The wins improved the Horns to 13-4 on the year and dropped the Miners to 11-8.
Junior righthander Torrey Schroeder (4-1) picked up the victory in game one after scattering eight hits and four runs over 5.2 innings, while fanning four. Tresselt came on in the sixth, throwing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up her first save of the season. UTEP starter Stacie Townsend (7-5) suffered the loss after tossing 7.0 innings and giving up six runs on 10 hits.
In the nightcap, Tresselt (1-2) picked up the victory after coming on in relief of sophomore righthander Brittany Barnhill and throwing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Townsend was again saddled with the loss in game two, tossing 1.0 inning of relief and allowing the game-winning run.
Junior second baseman Loryn Johnson and senior centerfielder Kacie Gaskin headlined the Texas offense in game one with three hits each. Gaskin added two RBI to her effort and junior designated player Tallie Thrasher registered three RBI.
Senior first baseman Desiree Williams paced the Texas offense in game two of the twin bill, posting a 2-for-4 performance with three RBI and one run scored.
Texas returns to action on Sunday, March 1 when it finished its three-game series with UTEP. First pitch is set for noon Central.
Game 1: Texas 6, UTEP 4
Texas plated four runs on three hits in the first, using a bases loaded triple by Thrasher and an RBI single by Gaskin. The Horns tacked on another run in the fifth, using singles by Johnson and Thrasher to set the table and a bases loaded sacrifice fly by freshman third baseman Nadia Taylor to push the UT lead to 5-0.
UTEP battled back for two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double by Camilla Carrera. The Miners registered two more runs in the sixth, taking advantage of two singles to start the inning. UTEP plated one run on a UT error and Smith raced home on an RBI single by Townsend that moved the score to 5-4.
The Longhorns answered the Miners rally with a run of their own in the top of the seventh. Freshman pinch runner Courtney Craig stole second before advancing to third on a sacrifice. Craig then came home on Gaskin's second RBI single of the day to give UT a 6-4 edge.
Game 2: Texas 7, UTEP 6
The Miners claimed an early 2-0 lead in the second game of the twin bill when third baseman Amber Bennett connected for a two-run home run to deep leftfield. Texas answered in the third, using a pair of one-out singles by Craig and Gaskin to set the table for Williams who launched her 24th career homer to give the Horns a 3-2 lead.
Texas recorded two more runs in the fourth, using a walk by Thrasher to start the rally and a two-run home run to left centerfield by junior leftfielder Brittany Chalk to extend the UT advantage to 5-2. The Miners responded in the fifth, tallying four hits and pushing a pair of runs across to narrow the margin to 6-4. UTEP's Becky Smith and Chelsea Troupe got things going with back-to-back singles and both runners came around to score on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.
UTEP knotted the game at six in the sixth, using a leadoff triple by Jennifer Davis to start the frame and a pair of RBI singles by Shea Lodes and Troupe to push the tally to 6-6. The Longhorns battled back quickly to reclaim the lead, taking advantage of a one-out single by freshman shortstop Raygan Feight and an RBI single to rightfield by Johnson that put UT in front, 7-6.
