SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns logged a come-from-behind 6-5 win over the Texas State Bobcats in the first game played at the newly renovated Bobcat Field on Tuesday evening.
With the Longhorns trailing 5-3, Brandon Belt deposited a solo home run over the leftfield fence with one out in the top of the seventh to coagulate the bleeding.
Texas (10-0) took its first lead of the game in the eighth inning. Kevin Keyes drew a leadoff walk and replaced on the base paths by Tim Maitland. Maitland advanced to second on a balk and an error on a grounder by David Hernandez put runners on the corners. Russell Moldenhauer tied the game with a pinch-hit single through the left side of the infield. Travis Tucker drove in the game-winning run with a single up the middle to plate Hernandez.
The Bobcats pounced early for a 1-0 lead in the first. Tyler Sibley was hit by a pitch to start the frame and with one out Paul Goldschmidt drew a walk. A throwing error by Hernandez on a grounder by Keith Prestridge drove in Sibley.
Texas State (6-3) added a pair of runs in the second. With one out, Ben Theriot doubled down the rightfield line and scored on a single up the middle by Adam Witek. Witek moved to third on a single by Jason Martinson and scored on a single to rightfield by Sibley to inflate the cushion to 3-0.
The Longhorns knotted the game in the top of the fourth. Belt and Michael Torres hit back-to-back singles to ignite the rally. After a pair of strikeouts, Cameron Rupp drew a walk to load the bases.
Hernandez blooped a single to centerfield to plate Belt and Torres and Connor Rowe singled through the right side of the infield to push Rupp across for the equalizer.
The Bobcats reclaimed the lead in the sixth with RBI singles by Bret Atwood and Spenser Dennis.
Texas State could have done more damage in the fourth inning, but Keith Shinaberry induced a bases-loaded, 1-2-3 double play to squelch a potential rally.
Austin Wood (3-0) earned the win in relief. He scattered one hit and one walk while striking out one over 3.1 innings. Shinaberry allowed two unearned runs on four hits over 2.1 innings.
Tyler Brundridge (0-1) was the hard-luck loser for the Bobcats, allowing two unearned runs on two hits and one walk while striking out two over 1.1 innings.
Hernandez led the UT offense, going 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Belt went 2-for-5 with two runs, one home run and one RBI.
Atwood and Laurn Randell each had two hits for Texas State.
Texas returns to action on Friday with a 7 p.m. Central contest against the Stanford Cardinal at Sunken Diamond in Palo Alto, California.
