Baseball takes game two, 11-7, to sweep twin bill

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 9 Texas Longhorns logged their highest run total of the season to topple the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 11-7, in the second game of a Big 12 Conference baseball doubleheader at Hawks Field on Friday evening.
The win gave Texas a sweep of the twin bill and gave the Horns nine wins in their last 11 games.
Texas (23-8, 8-6 Big 12 Conference) scored multiple runs in each of its first four at-bats to take a 10-0 lead. The first inning featured a two-run double by Tant Shepherd. Michael Torres hit a two-run single and Shepherd drove in a run with a groundout in the second. A solo home run by Cameron Rupp keyed a three-run third. Doubles by Shepherd and Kevin Keyes to lead off the frame and a sacrifice fly by Preston Clark gave the Horns a 10-run lead.
Nebraska (16-17-1, 4-10 Big 12) cut the lead in half with five runs in the bottom half of the fourth. The Cornhuskers scored earned runs on a single by D.J. Belfonte and a sacrifice fly by Cory Burleson. After an error by Torres at third with two outs allowed the inning to continue, Cody Asche hit a three-run double to shave UT's advantage to 10-5.
The Cornhuskers tacked on two more runs in the fifth with a throwing error on an attempted inning-ending double play turn allowed a pair to score, trimming the lead to 10-7.
In the top of the sixth, the Longhorns got an insurance run. With one out, Keyes was hit by a pitch, stole second base and scored on a two-out single up the middle by Clark to push the lead to 11-7.
Brandon Belt led the Horns with three hits, going 3-for-4 with two runs and one sacrifice bunt. Torres, Shepherd and Clark all had two hits. Torres went 2-for-5 with one run, one stolen base and two RBI. Shepherd went 2-for-5 with one run, one double and three RBI. Clark went 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI.
Asche and Jeff Tezak each had three hits for Nebraska and Asche added three RBI.
Austin Dicharry and Austin Wood were Texas' two most effective pitchers. Dicharry pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit while striking out five. Wood finished the game with two innings of shutout relief, allowing three hits while striking out one.
The Longhorns and Cornhuskers wrap up the three-game series with a 1 p.m. game at Hawks Field on Saturday.
