Baseball completes regular-season with sweep of Alabama A&M

AUSTIN, Texas -- Freshman Taylor Jungmann faced the minimum 18 batters and struck out 10 in 6.0 innings to lead the No. 6 Texas Longhorns to a 9-3 win in the second game of a doubleheader sweep against the Alabama A&M Bulldogs at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday afternoon.
Jungmann (6-3) allowed just one hit in his six frames to earn the win. The northpaw tossed 5.0 innings before yielding a leadoff hit to Alabama A&M's Maverick Scott. After Jungmann retired Chris Jennings on strikes, Scott was caught stealing and Fabian Harper whiffed to close out the sixth.
Brandon Workman and Kendal Carrillo each retired all three batters they faced in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, including two strikeouts apiece.
Alabama A&M (14-29) scored all three of their runs with two outs in the ninth inning. The frame featured a bases-loaded walk by J.T. Thomas and a two-run single by Chris Hernandez.
Michael Torres led the Texas offense, going 2-for-3 with one home run, one stolen base, three runs and two RBI. Kevin Lusson added a pair of RBI.
The Longhorns pounced early with a run in the home half of the first. Torres was hit by a pitch and moved all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Travis Tucker. Brandon Belt drove him in with a sacrifice fly to stake Texas to a 1-0 lead.
Texas tacked on four more runs in the third. Torres walked and stole second base. Tucker followed with a walk to put two runners on. A two-base error on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Belt plated Torres. Lusson doubled to the gap in right centerfield to plate Belt and Tucker and inflate the cushion to 4-0. The rally was capped off when Kevin Keyes singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Lusson.
David Hernandez manufactured a run for Texas in the fourth, reaching on an error by the A&M shortstop, stealing second base and scoring on a double by Tucker to give UT a 6-0 advantage.
The Longhorns scored a pair of insurance runs in the fifth with a sacrifice fly by Hernandez and an RBI single by Torres.
Torres capped off the Texas scoring with a leadoff home run over the wall in right centerfield to start the eighth.
Kellen Toone (0-3) was saddled with the loss for Alabama A&M, allowing six runs, four earned, on four hits and four walks while striking out one over 3.1 innings.
Texas returns to action on Wednesday when the Longhorns open up play at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. The Horns are slated to play the Baylor Bears at a time yet to be determined.
