Baseball sweeps series from Baylor

WACO, Texas -- Taylor Jungmann was overpowering in his first career Big 12 start, Cameron Rupp launched his sixth home run of the season and Austin Wood joined the 20-20 club as the No. 8 Texas Longhorns completed as sweep of the No. 17 Baylor Bears with a 3-1 at Baylor Ballpark.
Jungmann (5-3) fanned 10 Bears and allowed just one run on three hits and one walk over 6.0 innings. The freshman right-hander started his procession of strikeouts with two in the first inning and added two in the second, one in the third and two each in the fourth and fifth frames. He whiffed the last batter he faced with two runners on in the sixth to get out of a jam.
After Austin Dicharry put a scoreless seventh inning in the books for the Horns, Wood wrapped up the game with two shutout innings. The lefty became the second player in school history to log 20 wins and 20 saves in a career, joining J. Brent Cox. The southpaw allowed just one hit and struck out one batter.
Rupp spearheaded Texas' offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with one home run and two RBI.
The Longhorns drew first blood in the top of the second inning. With one out, Cameron Rupp deposited a 2-1 offering from Baylor starter Willie Kempf over the fence in leftfield for his second dinger of the series.
Texas (33-11-1, 15-8-1 Big 12) tacked on another run in the top of the fourth. Brandon Belt hit a leadoff single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Lusson and Rupp plated him with a single to centerfield to inflate the cushion to 2-0.
Baylor (26-20, 10-13 Big 12) trimmed one run off the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Raynor Campbell drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Landis Ware. A single to rightfield by Dustin Dickerson put runners on the corners and Shaver Hansen pushed Campbell across for the run with a fielder's choice on what was nearly a 4-6-3 double-play grounder. After Aaron Miller singled up the middle to put runners back on the corners, Jungmann got out of the inning with a swinging strikeout by Dan Evatt.
The Longhorns manufactured an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Brandon Loy singled to centerfield to start the frame. With one out, Tim Maitland, making his first collegiate start, singled back at the pitcher to put Loy in scoring position and Michael Torres knocked him in with a single to rightfield.
Torres and Belt supplemented Rupp's performance at the plate. Torres went 3-for-5 with one RBI. Belt was 2-for-5 with one run scored.
The Texas pitchers held Baylor batters to five hits and issued just two walks.
Kempf (4-3) was saddled with the loss for Baylor. He allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out six over 5.0 innings.
The victory kept Texas in first place in the Big 12 standings with a 15-8-1 (.646) mark. The Horns lead Kansas State (12-7-1 - .625) and Texas A&M (13-8 - .619).
Texas returns to action Wednesday when the Horns host the Texas Southern Tigers in a 6 p.m. contest at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
