TULSA, Okla. -- University of Texas senior Charlie Holland suffered a 5 and 4 defeat to Clemson's Ben Martin Saturday in the semifinals of the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championship at the Southern Hills Country Club. Holland concludes a brilliant run through that U.S. Amateur that saw him reach the quarterfinals for a second consecutive year and become UT's first semifinalist in the event since 2007.
Holland (Dallas, Texas) halved his first hole with Martin, but Martin went on to assume a 4-up lead through 6 holes, and he would stretch the lead to 5-up through nine holes. Holland birdied the par-four 366-yard 10th hole to close within 4-up, but Martin regained his 5-up lead on the next hole.
Trailing 5-up after 12 holes, Holland stayed alive at No. 13 with a birdie to close within 4-up, but Martin captured the 14th and final hole to regain an insurmountable 5-up lead with four holes left to play.
