Soccer falls 2-1 to Saint Mary's

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The University of Texas Soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Saint Mary's Friday afternoon at the 15th annual Cal Invitational at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, Calif. Texas moves to 1-2-0 on the season while the Gaels improve to 2-1-0.
All three goals in the match were scored in the second half with Saint Mary's getting on the board first in the 57th minute. Ashley Nied got the play started when she fired a shot that UT keeper Shaine Millheiser punched out of the box. The shot rebounded to an open Daelyn Paul at the top of the box who fired it in past Millheiser for the score.
Texas answered just 10 minutes later off a free kick opportunity. Junior Niki Arlitt crossed the ball into the Gaels box where freshman Becka Rivera was able to head it in for the equalizer and for her first goal as a Longhorn.
With the match knotted at one, both teams picked up the offensive attack but it was Saint Mary's who was able to capitalize scoring the gamewinner in the 82nd minute.
Texas returns to Edwards Field on Sunday to face No. 14/16 California at 2 p.m. Central.

On overall game: Well we got a lot of work today. As I've said from day one, we've got a lot of work to do. We weren't very good today and we've got to try and be better on Sunday.
On having success from free kicks: Well we should be dangerous off of those things because we've got players that can serve the ball well. We've got some size and we can get onto some of those balls so it is an area that we should be good.
On focus heading into Sunday: I think the biggest thing is to try and get some people healthy. We just keep getting beat up and that wasn't good for us.
