AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas soccer team played Texas Tech to a 0-0 double overtime tie Friday night out at Mike A. Myers Stadium in front of a season-high crowd of 2,442. The Longhorns are now 7-3-3 on the season and 0-2-2 in league action while the Red Raiders are 9-4-1 and 2-2-1 in Big 12 contests.
In the first half, the Longhorns put together a strong string of looks with chances coming from sophomore Kristin Cummins, junior Kylie Doniak and sophomore Hannah Higgins in the 17th, 22nd and 23rd minutes, respectively.
Higgins looked to have another chance in the 76th minute when she dribbled through three Red Raider defenders into the box but sent her shot just wide. Just five minutes later, Doniak had an opportunity off of a free kick right outside the box and after her initial kick bounced off the wall created by the Red Raider defense, gave it another shot but her kick sailed just outside the near post.
The first overtime was played in the middle third of the field with neither team able to get a shot off, setting up the second set of extra minutes. Tech's best look of the entire whole came in the second overtime period when Tiffini Smith got her foot on the ball in the six-yard box after sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Gaul had come off her line to try and intercept the cross. Smith then fired a shot into what appeared to be an open net but senior defender Erica Campanelli had stepped in and headed out Smith's attempt.
Texas controlled the match for the majority of the game posting 15 shots to Tech's 11 and boasting a 12-6 advantage on corner kicks. The tie marks the second-straight year that these two programs have ended in a draw after last year's 2-2 result in Austin.
The Longhorns return to Myers Stadium Sunday night at 7 p.m. when they host the Baylor Bears.
