AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Softball team allowed an early run and trailed the entire game before pushing two runs across in the seventh to edge No. 13 LSU, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at McCombs Field. The victory improved UT to 3-0 on the year and earned the Horns the No. 1 seed in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational semifinals. Texas will meet fourth-seeded DePaul in the semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Central.
Texas freshman righthander Blaire Luna (2-0) earned the win for Texas after firing three innings of hitless relief, while fanning seven, including her final six batters. Senior hurler Erin Tresselt tossed the first four frames for the Horns, allowing one run on four hits and striking out two. LSU starter Brittany Mack (0-1) suffered the loss for the Tigers, surrendering two runs on six hits in 7.0 innings of action.
LSU (1-2) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first, taking advantage of a leadoff single by centerfielder Kirsten Shortridge and a UT error to put a runner at second with no outs. An RBI triple by Rachel Mitchell plated Shortridge and gave the Tigers the early edge.
Texas was held scoreless until the final frame, when it used a leadoff single to centerfield by senior shortstop Loryn Johnson to jumpstart its offense. Junior catcher Amy Hooks brought pinch runner Torie Schmidt home with an RBI double to straightaway centerfield. Hooks advanced to third on a throwing error and came around to score on junior second baseman Raygan Feight's game-winning RBI single.
Sophomore centerfielder Courtney Craig headlined the offense in the win with a pair of doubles, while Hooks and Feight each notched an RBI.
