Baseball drops series to New Mexico

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns were unable to get timely hits and left nine on base in a 3-1 loss to New Mexico Lobos in collegiate baseball action at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Lobos took the early lead, scavenging a run in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Max Willett singled up the middle and Kenny Held laced a wall-banger to centerfield for a RBI double.
The Longhorns knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the sixth. With one out, Kevin Keyes reached on a bunt single, moved to third on a single through the right side of the infield and scored on a single to leftfield by Connor Rowe.
New Mexico manufactured a run in the top of the seventh to take a 2-1 lead. Alex Allbritton started the frame with a single to rightfield, moved to third with a sacrifice bunt by Daniel Gonzalez and a groundout by Adam Courcha. Andrew McKirahan came in from the bullpen to relieve starter Austin Dicharry and yielded a run-scoring single through the right side of the infield for the go-ahead run.
The Lobos tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Willett laced a double down the leftfield line and scored when Held bounced a singled up the middle for the 3-1 lead.
Dicharry (0-1) lost a decision at UFCU Disch-Falk Field for the first time in his career. He allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out five over 6.2 innings.
Mike Lachapelle (1-0) earned the win for the Lobos. He allowed one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out one over 6.0 innings. Edwin Carl followed with 2.1 innings of hitless relief, allowing two walks while striking out four. Gera Sanchez earned his first save of the season, retiring both batters he faced, including one strikeout.
Tant Shepherd led the Texas offense, going 2-for-4.
Willett, Held and Allbritton had two hits apiece for the Lobos. Willett added a double and two runs. Held hit a double and drove in a pair.
Texas returns to action on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. contest against Dallas Baptist at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
