ARLINGTON, Texas -- The No. 14 Texas Softball team used an RBI double by senior shortstop Loryn Johnson in the 10th inning as the Longhorns outlasted UT Arlington, 3-2, Thursday night. The victory improved UT to 20-3 on the year, while the Mavericks fell to 12-9.
Freshman righthander Blaire Luna (10-2) pitched a gem in 6.0 innings of relief, allowing just one hit, striking out 14 and walking none. She spelled Texas senior starter Erin Tresselt who threw the first 4.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits and walked two. UT Arlington righthander Teri Lyles (6-4) was saddled with the loss after throwing 8.0 stellar innings of relief. Lyles scattered eight hits, allowed one run and struck out two in her losing effort.
After a seven-inning stalemate, Texas started the 10th with sophomore centerfielder Courtney Craig on second. Craig advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore first baseman Lexy Bennett before Johnson's RBI double down the leftfield line pushed Craig across and moved the score to 3-2.
Texas grabbed a quick 1-0 edge in the first Bennett launched a solo homer to right centerfield. The home run was her sixth of the season and extended UT's team home run streak to 20 consecutive games.
UT Arlington answered in the bottom of the first, using back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases to start the frame. A Texas error allowed UTA's Teri Lyles to score and a bases loaded walk by Samantha Chumchal forced Cara Hulme home to give the Mavs a 2-1 lead.
Senior rightfielder Tallie Thrasher evened the score for the Horns in the second when she connected for her sixth homer of the season and tied the game at two apiece.
Freshman outfielder Taylor Hoagland and sophomore third baseman Nadia Taylor headlined the Texas offense on the night with three hits apiece. Junior second baseman Raygan Feight added a 2-for-4 effort, including a double.
