Luna tosses no-hitter as No. 15 Softball falls to UNT, 1-0

DENTON, Texas -- The No. 15 Texas Softball received a no-hit pitching performance by freshman righthander Blaire Luna, but failed to score a run as it lost to North Texas, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The loss dropped the Longhorns to 20-4 on the year, while the Mean Green improved to 10-9 overall.
Luna (10-3) fired her second career no-hitter in the loss, registering the first no-hit loss in UT history. She threw 6.0 innings, allowed one run, walked five and fanned 10 in the losing effort. North Texas reliever Ashley Lail (4-3) earned the victory after logging 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, scattering four hits and striking out three.
The Mean Green broke the scoreless tie in the fourth, using back-to-back walks by Mallory Cantler and Lisa Johnson to start the inning. Pinch runner Anna Barren ran for Cantler advanced to second on Johnson's walk and moved to third on a fly out. A wild pitch by Luna allowed Barren to race home and gave UNT a 1-0 edge.
Texas out-hit North Texas on the day, 8-to-0 with senior shortstop Loryn Johnson and sophomore leftfielder Courtney Craig notching two hits each. Freshman rightfielder Taylor Hoagland's bunt single in the second inning extended her team-best hitting streak to 11 games. Texas stranded nine baserunners in the game, while North Texas left six runners on base.
The Longhorns return to action on Thursday, March 18 when they take on No. 7 Arizona State at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif. First pitch is set for 1:15 p.m. Central.
