No. 4 Softball comes up short in game two against No. 2 Oklahoma

The Longhorns combined for eight hits.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 4 Texas Softball fell to No. 2 Oklahoma, 4-3, in game two Saturday night at McCombs Field.
Texas drops to 32-6 overall, 9-5 in SEC play and 12-5 against ranked opponents. The Longhorns are 17-3 at home this season.
The Horns combined for eight hits, led by two multi-hit performances by senior second baseman Leighann Goode and junior first baseman Katie Stewart. Goode went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Stewart finished 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Junior shortstop Viviana Martinez hammered an RBI single up the middle and freshman third baseman Jaycie Nichols also cracked an RBI single up the middle. Junior center fielder Kayden Henry scored twice and also connected on a base hit. Freshman left fielder Alisa Sneed went 1-for-3 at the dish with a bunt single.
Three different arms were in the circle for the Longhorns. Freshman RHP Hannah Wells made her eighth start of the year and went 2.0 frames, surrendering a solo home run and three total hits with a strikeout. Sophomore LHP Brenlee Gonzales entered in the third and spun 2.0 frames, giving up two earned runs on two hits while recording three punchouts and working around three walks. Senior RHP Citlaly Gutierrez threw the final 3.0 innings and gave up one run on three hits while striking out two and working around three walks.
Senior catcher Reese Atwood shined behind the plate, throwing out a would-be base stealer at second base in the first and picking off another runner in the top of the fourth. Texas played flawless defense on the night.
Texas struck early in the first when Martinez punctured a one-out, RBI single up the middle to score Henry for a 1-0 lead. Oklahoma responded in the top of the second with a solo home run to even the score at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fourth when Nichols' two-out single up the middle scored Goode from third base to put the Horns ahead, 2-1. A three-run home run by OU in the top of the fifth gave the Sooners a 4-2 advantage.
Texas trimmed the OU lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Goode cracked two-out, RBI single back up the middle to plate Henry.

The series finale between Texas and Oklahoma is set for 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, April 12, at McCombs Field. The game will air on ESPN with Beth Mowins, Michele Smith and Jessica Mendoza on the call.
