No. 15 Softball falls to Cal State Fullerton, 3-1

FULLERTON, Calif. -- The No. 15 Texas Softball team suffered its first loss of the Judi Garman Classic as it fell to Cal State Fullerton, 3-1, Friday night. The loss dropped the Longhorns to 22-5 on the year, while the Titans improved to 4-23.
Freshman righthander Kim Bruins (6-2) was saddled with the loss after tossing 6.0 innings, scattering six hits, allowing three runs, walking one and fanning two. Fullerton starter Ari Cervantes (2-10) picked up the win after throwing 4.0 innings, surrendering three hits and striking out two.
Fullerton struck first in the second, taking advantage of three singles, including a run-scoring single by rightfielder Kadie Baldwin. The Titans tacked on another run in the fourth courtesy of an RBI groundout by Baldwin.
Texas plated its lone run in the sixth with junior catcher Amy Hooks reaching on an error to start the frame and pinch runner Torie Schmidt coming around to score on pinch hitter Tallie Thrasher's RBI single.
The Titans pushed the tally to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, using a leadoff double by Nicole Johnson to start the inning and a sacrifice fly by Cervantes to score Johnson.
Freshman rightfielder Taylor Hoagland's infield single in the third extended her team-best hitting streak to 14 games. She is currently two games away from tying the school record of 16, set by Lindsay Gardner in 2000.
Texas continues action at the Judi Garman Classic on Saturday, March 20 when it takes on No. 4 Michigan. First pitch is set for 1:15 p.m. Central.
