NORMAN, Okla. -- Taylor Jungmann and Chance Ruffin scattered four hits and fanned 12 batters as the No.7 Texas Longhorns posted a 5-0 shutout over the No. 17 Oklahoma Sooners on Thursday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Jungmann (3-1) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out six in 7.0 innings to pick up the win. Ruffin hit the first batter he faced but struck out the next six batters to end the game. It marked the second shutout of the season for Texas, with Jungmann starting both blankings.
Russell Moldenhauer punched a 2-1 offering over the leftfield fence for a leadoff home run as the Longhorns drew first blood in the top of the second.
Texas tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth. Kevin Lusson singled and Jordan Etier was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Cohl Walla's attempt at a sacrifice bunt was unsuccessful putting him at first and Etier at second. Brandon Loy singled up the middle to drive in Etier. A wild pitch put two runners in scoring position and Cameron Rupp plated Walla with a sacrifice fly to stake the Horns to the claim of a 3-0 lead.
The Longhorns manufactured an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Walla laced a single to leftfield, moved to third on a wild pitch and a groundout by Loy. Rupp pushed him across with his second sacrifice fly of the game.
Texas inflated the cushion to 5-0 with a run in the top of the ninth. Walla hit a leadoff double to the gap in left centerfield. After Loy walked and Rupp was retired on strikes, Paul Montalbano delivered a pinchi-hit single to leftfield to knock in Walla.
Walla paced the Longhorns offense, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Lusson and Moldenhauer each added two hits.
Zach Neal (3-1) was saddled with the loss for the Sooners. He yielded three runs on seven hits while striking out nine over 5.2 innings.
The Longhorns and Sooners return to action on Friday with a 6:30 p.m. contest at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
