No. 6 Baseball uses defense and pitching to beat Kansas, 3-1

AUSTIN, Texas -- Cole Green pitched a gem to extend the No. 6 Texas Longhorns win streak to seven games with a 3-1 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Saturday afternoon.
Green (7-0) pitched 7.0 innings allowing only one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out five to maintain his perfect record on the season. Stayton Thomas and Hoby Milner combined to pitch a scoreless eighth, while Chance Ruffin recorded his eighth save on the season with a scoreless ninth inning. Ruffin hit one batter and struck out two in the frame.
The Longhorns infield defense helped seal the win with three double plays. Six-four-three double plays helped Texas quell rallies in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.
Kansas (19-12-1, 3-4-1 Big 12) opened the scoring in the top of the third inning. After a two-out single by Brandon Macias, Casey Lytle walked to put runners on first and second. Robby Price then beat out shortstop Brandon Loy's throw for an infield single, bringing Macias around to score and putting the Jayhawks up 1-0.
Texas (25-7, 9-2 Big 12) answered in the bottom of the fifth inning. Russell Moldenhauer led off the inning with a single to left field. A passed ball moved Moldenhauer to second, before a deep fly out by Kevin Lusson pushed him to third base. Connor Rowe then delivered a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate Moldenhauer and tie the game at 1-1.
The Longhorns took the lead in the sixth inning and never looked back. Tant Shepherd hit his fifth home run of the season, a two-out solo shot to the leftfield bullpen, which put Texas up 2-1.
Texas then added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Rowe led off the inning with a walk, and was then bunted over to second by Jordan Etier. After a wild pitch moved Rowe to third, Brandon Loy brought him home with an infield single extending the Longhorn lead to 3-1.
Shepherd led the Longhorns offense going 2-for-4 with a home run. Moldenhauer continued his offensive production for the series, going 1-for-3 and scoring a run.
Bobby Price went 2-for-4 and drove in the Jayhawks' only run on the day.
Kansas' starter Cameron Selik (4-3) was tagged with the loss, pitching a complete-game innings for the Jayhawks. He allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Texas looks to sweep Kansas on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
