AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 3 Texas' Head Coach Augie Garrido became the first coach in NCAA history to win 600 or more games at two different Division I schools with a 5-0 Texas Longhorn win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Texas (33-7, 15-2 Big 12) increased its overall win streak to 15 games and 13 in the Big 12, with solid offensive production and spectacular defense. In the past five games, the Longhorns have outscored their opponents 62-3 while outhitting them 70-19.
Texas jumped out to an early lead in the first thanks to Cameron Rupp's third home run in as many games. Brandon Loy started off the inning with a one-out single to centerfield and advanced to second on a Tant Shepherd single to left. Rupp then shot a high fly ball over the centerfield wall to give the Longhorns a 3-0 lead.
The Longhorns increased their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third with some aggressive base running from Shepherd. After a one out single to left, Shepherd proceeded to steal second and third, and scored on a Rupp sacrifice fly to center.
Texas' timely hitting added another run in the fourth. Moldenhauer started off the inning being hit by a pitch, and advanced to second on a Kevin Lusson sac bunt. After Moldenhauer reached third as a result of a Tyler Lyons balk, Jordan Etier dropped a single just over the third baseman to bring Moldenhauer home.
Oklahoma State (23-15, 5-9 Big 12) attempted to muster up some offense of their own in the sixth when Davis Duren singled through the left side to give the Cowboys their first hit of the game. Tom Belza walked on four straight pitches to put runners on first and second with no outs, but Texas' Cole Green dug in and found a way to come up with back-to-back strikeouts. Duren would add pressure to the Longhorns by stealing third, but with two outs Green was able to get Mark Ginther to fly out to left to end the inning.
Green (9-0) earned the win and pitched his second consecutive complete game shutout allowing no runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five. In his past four starts, Green has worked 32.2 innings giving up one earned run on 12 hits and nine walks while striking out 20.
Oklahoma State's Tyler Lyons (3-3) was saddled with the loss going eight innings and giving up five earned runs on seven hits and seven strikeouts.
Texas' starters have now pitched four straight complete games. Green and Brandon Workman have combined for three wins, seventeen strikeouts, and a 0.00 ERA while Taylor Jungman posted a win with eight strikeouts and a 1.00 ERA. The Longhorn defense has played a big role during Texas' stellar four game run. Most notably, Shepherd, Loy, and Etier have combined for 53 put outs with only one error.
Rupp led the Longhorn's offensive firepower batting 1-for-3 with four RBIs, one run scored, and a homerun. Shepherd added two runs and two stolen bases in a 2-for-3 effort and Jordan Etier notched an RBI going 1-for-3.
Texas goes for the sweep on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. With a victory, the Horns would also match their longest win streak since 2005.
TEXAS QUOTES
Head Coach Augie Garrido
On performance of the team today: I think the performance of the team was lead by Cole (Green) and the way he would attack the strike zone. In addition to that, I think all of the pitchers have great skill sets and are all very talented and have a lot of courage but I think the things that are helping them he most defensibly is Cameron Rupp's catching. He has improved to above average and the middle infield continues to play to an extremely high level and take away hits and find outs and the centerfielder is one of the best in college baseball. Connor (Rowe) makes all the plays and that adds to the confidence to the pitchers. It has been nice too because we have had balance from the offensive side of it and we have given them runs early and that is what we try to do. It makes the pitcher feel more confident when he has some leeway out there. We are playing good baseball right now the key to everything is to keep working on the fundaments and the game its self and to keep working to get better and not to focusing on the winning and losing.
RHP Cole Green
On the season: We are playing really good baseball. If you look at our practices, we are really working hard. Everyone is taking care of their business over there on campus with school and it has given us confidence. We are doing a good job of staying with our routines and playing really good baseball.
On setting the tone early: When we got those three runs at the beginning I knew we were going to be in good shape and we were possibly going to get a few more. I also knew I was going to have the opportunity to go out there and throw my game real relaxed. When you have a lead like that you can go right at people. You don't have to pitch around people because a solo shot is not going to hurt you that bad and I think it gives me confidence and I know they are going to keep producing and it is fun to watch.
1B Tant Shepherd
On the teams hitting: From top to bottom, we are hitting the ball hard. Everyone is taking really good at-bats and it is showing.
C Cameron Rupp
On not letting down in tomorrow's game: We have to come out ready to play like we have the last couple of weeks. We need to keep having fun and don't let things get to our head.
On Coach Garrido becoming the first coach to win 600 or more games at two different NCAA Division I schools: We didn't even know and I don't know if he knew. Congratulations to him. He is the best coach ever to coach the game and it is awesome for him.
On how much credit he deserves for how well the pitchers are pitching: They are the ones out there doing it. I am just behind them catching the ball for them. They are the ones that have to get the job done. I am just helping them out.
