AUSTIN, Texas -- Junior right-handed pitcher Chance Ruffin was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games May 17-23, in voting by a panel of media covering the conference, the league announced on Monday.
It is Ruffin's first career weekly pitching accolade and the fourth for UT's pitching staff with Cole Green earning the award on three occasions.
Ruffin earned a win and a save on the weekend and fanned eight of the 12 batters he faced over 3.2 shutout innings.
In Friday's contest, Ruffin struck out six of the seven batters he faced and allowed just one hit in 2.0 innings to earn his 13th save of the season. The Austin, Texas native earned the win on Saturday. He entered the contest with one out and two on with the game tied 4-4 in the eighth inning. He forced a groundout and recorded a strikeout to get out of the jam. After Texas put two on the board in the top of the ninth, Ruffin retired the side in order in the home half of the inning to earn the victory.
On the season, Ruffin is 6-1 with 13 saves and a 0.81 ERA. He has appeared in 32 games, recording 83 strikeouts in 55.2 innings.
The Longhorns are listed No. 2 in the Baseball America poll and No. 1 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll and the Collegiate Baseball rankings.
Texas won the Big 12 Conference regular-season by eight games with a 24-3 league ledger and currently own a 46-8 overall mark.
The Longhorns return to action on Wednesday when they face the Missouri Tigers on the first day of the 2010 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
