COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Texas Longhorns allowed a goal in the seventh minute of action and were unable to tally an equalizer in a 1-0 loss to the No. 22 South Carolina Gamecocks in the first round of the NCAA Championship at Stone Stadium on Friday night.
Maria Petroni worked the ball to the end line down the right flank and centered the ball to Kayla Grimsley. She chipped the ball to Lolly Holland who dribbled the ball past Texas netminder Alexa Gaul with 6:25 off the clock in the first half.
The Longhorns peppered the goal area with shots near the second half, including Allison Smith launching a couple of howitzers that were blocked by South Carolina defenders. Despite drawing even in shots at 7-7, Texas was unable to knot the game before the half.
Texas had a pair of chances to put the equalizer in during the second stanza, but Vanessa Ibewuike was unable to get an empty net touch on a cross from Hannah Higgins. Five minutes later, Higgins had a one-on-one opportunity with the netminder, but was unable to chip it over the charging Sabrina D'Angelo.
For the game, Texas held a 12-11 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. The corner kicks were even at 4-4, with Texas taking all three of the second half.
South Carolina (16-6-0) will advance to the second round of the tournament to face the winner of Friday night's match between the Stanford Cardinal and the Montana Grizzlies.
