WACO, Texas-- No. 19/18 Baylor (9-3, 6-3 Big 12) defeated Texas (7-5, 4-5 Big 12) by a 48-24 margin Saturday afternoon at Baylor's Floyd Casey Stadium.
Texas racked up 557 total yards of offense as quarterback Case McCoy eclipsed his career-high passing yards, which was previously set at 168 against UCLA, in the first half alone with 232 yards. McCoy finished the game with 356 yards after completing 24-of-39 passes with three touchdowns.
Tight end Blaine Irby recorded his third touchdown in three games. Linebacker Keenan Robinson led the defensive effort with nine tackles. Safety Blake Gideon hauled in an interception and defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat recorded a sack to bring his season total to seven.
Baylor picked up a pair of touchdowns to open the game with a 14-0 lead. On their first possession, Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kendall Wright.
After a missed field goal by the Longhorns, Baylor's Terrance Ganaway scored on a 20-yard run to complete a Bears 80-yard drive.
But the Longhorns quickly fought back. Texas advanced the ball 67 yards on 16 plays during their next possession to cut the Baylor lead to 14-7 with 33 seconds remaining in the first quarter. On third and goal, McCoy fired a bullet into the back of the end zone that was caught one-handed by an outstretched Irby. The officials initially signaled that Irby was out of bounds, but upon further review it was ruled a touchdown after seeing Irby's foot was down before falling out of bounds.
The Longhorns defense forced the first punt of the game within the opening minute of the second quarter and Texas took advantage of the stop by knotting the score at 14 on the ensuing possession. McCoy connected with wide receiver Jaxon Shipley for a 78-yard pass to spot the ball at the Baylor three-yard-line. Two plays later, McCoy found tackle-eligible Luke Poehlmann on a three-yard touchdown pass in the end zone that completely fooled the Bears' defense.
Texas forced a second consecutive punt for Baylor, which gave way for the Horns to achieve their first lead of the game at 21-14 at the 7:40 mark of the second quarter. McCoy threw the longest pass of his career for 80 yards to wide receiver Marquise Goodwin whose overwhelming speed allowed him to break away from the pack and cross into the end zone untouched.
The momentum switched back to Baylor's side as the Bears closed out the first half with a 10-0 scoring streak to take a 24-21 lead into the locker room. Kicker Aaron Jones booted a 22-yard field goal through the uprights with 4:39 remaining in the second quarter.
A set of back-to-back-to-back turnovers occurred as Baylor defensive tackle Tracy Robertson recovered a McCoy fumble, then Texas' Gideon intercepted Griffin four plays later. Bears safety KJ Morton then intercepted a McCoy pass three plays later and advanced it to the UT 2. Griffin then scored on a quarterback sneak to make the score 24-21, Baylor at the half.
Texas started the second half with a five-play, 58-yard drive that culminated with a Justin Tucker 39-yard field goal to tie the score at 24. Baylor then went 75 yards on six plays resulting in a one-yard rush into the end zone by Bears Ganaway to recapture the lead at 31-24.
But the Longhorns were unable to overcome four second-half turnovers as Baylor scored on a Griffin 10-yard touchdown run, an Aaron Jones 40-yard field goal and a 39-yard touchdown reception by Terrance Williams from Griffin to make the final score 48-24.
Baylor retained possession of the ball for the remaining 4:09 as time expired.
Texas was not able to get the win despite outgaining the Bears 557-511 and controlling the time of possession 38:30 to 21:30. Despite their valiant effort throughout the game, costly turnovers proved too much for the Longhorns to overcome.
