AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Longhorns dropped a 10-1 decision to Maryland Terrapins in the first game of a baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Maryland (1-1) got on the board early after Alfredo Rodriguez started the game with a leadoff single. Texas starter Cole Green then hit the next batter, centerfielder Korey Wacker. That brought up Tomo Delp, who sent a 3-1 offering to deep left-center for a three-run homer, putting the Terrapins up 3-0 in the first inning.
Texas (1-1) answered in the bottom of the second with its only run of the game. Erich Weiss drew a one-out walk, and Jacob Felts followed with a single to right field. Kevin Lusson then grounded into a fielder's choice, making Felts out at second but advancing Weiss to third. Tant Sheperd then got his first hit of the season, a single through the middle, to plate Weiss and cut the Maryland lead to 3-1.
The Terrapins extended their lead in the top of the fifth. After allowing back-to-back singles by Jack Cleary and Rodriguez to open the inning, Cole Green again hit Wacker to load the bases. Brandon Loy then couldn't handle a sharply hit groundball by Tomo Delp, and the error brought in both Cleary and Rodriguez. That would be the last batter Cole Green would see, leaving the game with runners on first and third for relief pitcher Kirby Bellow.
Pinch hitter Brandon Padula then smashed a double through the left side to bring in Wacker before a cut-off throw was bobbled by Loy, allowing Delp to score from third. Bellow then walked Ryan Holland and gave up a single to Michael Montville, driving in Padula and putting Holland on third.
Texas went to their bullpen for the second time in the inning, bringing in Keifer Nuncio with still no outs in the inning. Nuncio was able to minimize the damage, getting Jake Stinnett to ground into a double play that drove in Holland for the final run of the frame, putting Maryland up 9-1.
Maryland added one more run to close out the scoring for the game. Kendal Carrillo came in to pitch the top of the seventh for the Horns, recording two quick outs. After Ryan Holland doubled to the right field wall, Carrillo walked Monteville to put runners on first and second. Stinnett then hit a hard single up to the middle off Jordan Etier's glove to drive in Holland and give the Terrapins the final 10-1 victory.
Maryland's starter David Carrol (1-0) earned the win, pitching 6.0 innings allowing three hits, one walk and striking out four while only giving up one run. Jimmy Reed pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Terps, giving up two hits, to close out the game.
Texas' Cole Green (0-1) was saddled with the loss pitching 4.0 innings allowing six earned runs off six hits and a walk while striking out five. Reliever Kirby Bellow did not register an out, giving up two runs, one earned, two hits and a walk. Keifer Nuncio pitched a perfect fifth and sixth inning, and Kendal Carrillo allowed one run on two hits and a walk in the seventh.
The Terrapin offense was led by Alfredo Rodriguez who went 3-for-4 on the game with two runs. Tomo Delp went 1-for-3 with four RBI, two runs and a walk, including his first-inning three run home run.
The Longhorns were paced by freshman Erich Weiss who remained perfect on the season batting 2-for-2 in the game with a run and walk. Tant Sheperd supplied the only RBI for the Horns in his 1-for-3 outing.
Texas and Maryland resume their four-game series with game two of the double header at UFCU Disch-Falk Field with first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m.
