AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Longhorns came back in dramatic fashion to take game two of Saturday's doubleheader against the Maryland Terrapins, 7-4. Texas trailed the entire game until a five-run eighth inning propelled the Horns to victory.
The Horns rallied in the bottom of the eighth with five runs to grab a 7-4 lead. Erich Weiss drew a leadoff walk, Kevin Lusson singled through the right side and Cohl Walla was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. After a Jacob Felts foul-out, Tant Shepherd drew a full-count before getting hit by a pitch and bringing in Weiss. Korey Wacker was then called upon to move from centerfield to the mound in relief for the Terrapins. Wacker pegged pinch-hitting Paul Montalbano to drive in Lusson. Wacker's next toss was a wild pitch that plated Walla and gave the Longhorns their first lead of the game. Mark Payton then dropped a ground-rule double down the left field line to drive in both Shepherd and Montalbano and seal the Longhorn victory.
Maryland (1-2), like in the first game of the double-header, got off to a fast start and put a run on the scoreboard in the opening frame. Alfredo Rodriguez led off the game with a walk. A Wacker sacrifice bunt moved Rodriguez to second, and a stolen base moved him to third. Tomo Delp then brought Rodriguez home with a groundout to open the scoring and give the Terrapins an early 1-0 lead.
The Terrapins tagged on another run in the top of the fourth inning. Brandon Padula led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Michael Montville then bunted him over to third before Jake Stinnett ripped another double down the left field line plating Padula, and extending the Maryland lead to 2-0.
The Longhorns (2-1) answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Brandon Loy led off the inning with a sharp single to third base. Jonathan Walsh then bunted Loy over to second before Weiss singled through the left side to drive him home, and cut the Terrapin lead in half to 2-1.
Maryland increased its lead in the top of the sixth inning. Montville opened the inning's scoring by delivering a two-out solo bomb to left-center. After Stinnett was hit by a pitch, Kyle Convissar singled to left field to end Texas' starter Sam Stafford's afternoon. The Longhorns brought in Keifer Nuncio, who gave up a single to center field to Charlie White that brought in Stinnett, and pushed the lead to 4-1.
Texas pushed through a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jordan Etier reached first after being hit by a pitch by Maryland reliever Chuck Ghysels. Payton then sent a double to leftfield. A throwing error by White on the double brought Etier home, and whittled the Terps' lead to 4-2.
Andrew McKirahan (1-0) earned the win for the Longhorns, pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, giving up only one hit and striking out one. Stafford got a no-decision, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out four. Keifer Nuncio also added 1.1 innings of scoreless relief allowing two hits and a walk. Stayton Thomas finished the game retiring Maryland's last batter in the top of the ninth for his first save of the season.
Maryland's reliever Chuck Ghysels (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up five runs, four of them earned, off of two hits, a walk and a strikeout. The Terrapins' starter, Eric Potter, earned a no-decision, pitching 6.0 innings and giving up only one run on four hits, one walk, and striking out three. Wacker also gave up one run on two hits for the Terps.
