HONOLULU - Texas Longhorns' junior pitcher Taylor Jungmann pitched his second consecutive complete-game shutout in a 2-0 win over the Hawaii Rainbows in the series opener at Les Murakami Stadium on Friday evening.
Jungmann (2-0) allowed just four hits and hit one batter while striking out nine over 9.0 innings.
"Everything I had was working today," Jungmann said. "Fastball, changeup and the breaking balls were all where I wanted them. I just made two bad pitches in the eighth inning. But I just had to regroup and pitch like there was nobody on base."
The Texas northpaw allowed a runner to reach scoring position in just the eighth inning when he allowed back-to-back two-out singles to Zack Swasey and Matt Harrison, the No. 8 and No. 9 hitters in the Rainbows' batting order. Jungmann ended the potential rally with by fanning leadoff hitter Breland Almadova
Jungmann retired the first eight batters he faced before hitting Harrison with a pitch. He got Breland Almadova to ground out to second base to end the inning. In the fourth inning All-American Kolten Wong reached on a bunt single, but Jungmann picked Wong off as he was cheating towards second. The only other hit came in the fifth when Collin Bennett singled up the middle with one out. Jungmann responded by retiring the next 10 batters before the back-to-back hits in the eighth.
"His approach to everything is about pitching on the next level," Garrido said. "His work ethic, his diet, the way he handles himself on the mound. He's very advanced in his approach and I think you can see that."
The Horns broke the scoring seal in the top of the third inning. With one out, Paul Montalbano hit a ball up the middle. Hawaii's second baseman Kolten Wong ranged deep to field the ball, but his throw which was late to first got away from the Rainbows' first baseman allowing Montalbano to move second base. Brandon Loy pushed Montalbano to third and the senior scored when Mark Payton roped a single into right field.
Texas inflated the cushion to 2-0 with a run in the sixth. Loy bounced a ground-rule double over the leftfield wall. Payton pushed Loy to third with a groundout to shortstop. Erich Weiss laced a single into the gap in left centerfield driving in Loy with the insurance run.
"We still have some work to do," Garrido said. "We left some runs out there that we need to drive in. But Hawaii threw three very good pitchers at us and the atmosphere that Mike (Trapasso) has going here is tremendous. This was a great baseball crowd and they were into it for the whole game."
Payton and Weiss each had two hits for Texas. Payton went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Weiss went 2-for-3 with one sac bunt and one RBI.
Matt Sisto (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Hawaii. He allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits while striking out four over 6.0 innings. Blair Walter worked 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out one. Michael Blake fanned one of the three batters he faced in a shutout ninth.
Texas and Hawaii return to action for the second game of the series Saturday at 7 p.m. Central.
