No. 7 Baseball falls short in bid to sweep No. 14 Oklahoma, 5-2

AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 7 Texas Longhorns' bid for a three-game sweep of the No. 14 Oklahoma Sooners fell short with a 5-2 loss on Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The loss snapped a 10-game win streak by the Longhorns in their series with the Sooners. Texas ended the weekend tied with the Texas A&M Aggies atop the Big 12 standings with identical 15-6 league records.
Oklahoma (31-13, 10-9) drew first blood in the top of the third inning. Cale Ellis lead off the inning with a single to leftfield and after moving to third on back-to-back bunts he scored when Tyler Ogle hit a wall-banger to rightfield for a double. Ogle came around to score when Texas shortstop Brandon Loy misplayed a grounder by Garrett Buechele to give Oklahoma a 2-0 edge.
Texas (33-11) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Tant Shepherd deposited a 2-ball, 1-strike offering over the 375-foot sign in leftfield for a one-out, solo home run.
The Sooners added two runs to their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Cameron Seitzer drew a walk to start the inning. With one out, Evan Mistich singled up the middle and Erik Ross inflated the cushion to 4-1 with his first career triple, to the wall in centerfield.
Oklahoma added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Max White hit a solo home run over the leftfield fence for the 5-1 lead.
The Horns mounted a late rally, but it came up short. Paul Montalbano drew a lead-off walk and Jonathan Walsh singled to right field to put a pair on. Cohl Walla trimmed the lead to 5-2 when he singled up the middle, scoring Montalbano. With runners on first and second and still no outs, Jordan Etier put a jolt into a ball that appeared to be heading towards the land of hits in shallow centerfield, but it was snared by Oklahoma shortstop Caleb Bushyhead for the first out of the inning. The rally was snuffed out with a strikeout by Kevin Lusson and a grounder to second base by Loy.
Sam Stafford (5-2) was saddled with the loss. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out three over 3.2 innings of work.
Dillon Overton (7-3) earned the win for Oklahoma, scattering two hits and four walks while striking out three over 4.2 innings of relief. Starter Bobby Shore left the game after 3.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits, while striking out three.
Tant Shepherd led the Texas offense, going 3-for-3 with one double, home run, one walk, one run and one RBI.
Mistich was the lone Sooner with multiple hits, going 2-for-2 with one walk, one hit-by-pitch and one sacrifice bunt.
Texas returns to action on Tuesday when the Longhorns host the Prairie View A&M Panthers in a 6 p.m. contest at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
