No. 5 Baseball wins doubleheader opener against Texas Southern in 11 innings

AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 5 Texas Longhorns pitching staff outdueled the Texas Southern Tigers and Brandon Loy drove in both runs to capture the first game of a doubleheader 2-1 in 11 innings Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The first game of the doubleheader was slated for seven innings.
Texas (37-12) pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning. Jordan Etier, a late defensive substitute, reached first after getting hit by a pitch. Brandon Loy then followed with a double to right center, and Etier wheeled around the bases to score the winning run.
The Tigers (23-26) pounced on the Horns first after five scoreless innings, pushing their lone run across in the top of the sixth inning. Lacy Jackson hit a one-out double to center over the head of a shallow-playing Cohl Walla. Terrell Jones then followed with a ground ball to Brandon Loy who flipped it to Erich Weiss for the tag play on Jackson at third, but leaving Jones on first. A passed ball advanced Jones to second, before Cameron Logan plated him with a single to right, barely beating out Paul Montalbano's throw to home.
The Texas offense snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Kevin Lusson drew a one-out walk, and Tim Maitland came in to pinch-run at first. A wild pitch by Texas Southern reliever Bryan Smith brought Maitland to second and a fielder's choice advanced him to third. After Loy had a suicide squeeze bunt go barely foul, he drove a single to rightfield to even the scoring at 1-1, and send the game to extra innings.
Hoby Milner (5-3) earned the victory for the Horns pitching 2.0 innings allowing only one hit and striking out one. Taylor Jungmann remained undefeated at home, but got the no decision after pitching 7.0 innings, giving up five hits, two walks and one unearned run. Corey Knebel also threw 2.0 innings of relief, allowing only one hit and two walks while striking out three, including stranding a runner on third with no outs.
Justin Cook (0-2) was saddled with the loss after pitching 1.1 innings, allowing two hits, one walk and the game-winning run. Texas Southern starter David Williams scattered one hit and three walks in 4.2 shutout innings. Bryan Smith pitched 2.0 innings of relief allowing the tying run while Abel Flores pitched 2.0 innings of scoreless relief for the Tigers.
