KENT STATE
Associate Head Coach Mike Birkbeck
Opening statement: I thought that was just a wonderful ballgame all the way around. The Texas Longhorns did not give up. They got down to their last out. But, we are thrilled to be in the position that we are in.
On David Lyon's grand slam: I was coaching at first base, and really at that point in time, we were hoping [David Lyon] would just barrel it up and hit a line drive somewhere. And it appeared to me that he had a couple pitches in the count to work with and then he came back with a high breaking ball. I was just hoping it would stay fair as it went down the line.
Redshirt sophomore P Andrew Chafin
On his performance tonight: I just went out there and threw my game. They were flushing me a little bit, but then once I got settled back down, I zoned in and was able to finish what I started for the most part.
On the effect of the six-run sixth inning on his pitching: I just tried to stay focused and keep doing what I was doing. I didn't want to change anything because it was working for the most part at that point in time.
Junior C David Lyon
On his grand slam: There were no outs when I came up, and I was just trying to get a hit and come up big for my team. He got ahead 0-2, so I was trying to just battle and put the ball in play to see if something would happen. He threw a fastball off the plate that was off. Then he just kept throwing curveballs, so he must have hung one, and I got a hold of it.
On facing Texas P Taylor Jungmann: We came in knowing he was a real great pitcher. We just knew if we put good swings on decent pitches, we'd have a chance to win, and that is what happened.
TEXAS
Head Coach Augie Garrido
Opening statement: I think it was a brilliant game. Kent State did a really great job of pitching and putting an inning together that separated the game. They did something that has not been done. They got a leadoff walk, three hits in a row, including a home run that has not been done, especially off Taylor (Jungmann). But it hasn't been done to anyone on this pitching staff all year long. Somewhere down the line you have to just take off your hat and say that team played a great game. Was it perfect on our part? No. But that wasn't the story of the game for me. The story of the game was their aggressiveness at the plate, their timely hitting, and their sustaining the rally in the sixth. It was a game that was aggressively played by both teams. Tonight we had fewer runs than they did and quite frankly, they played a better game than we did.
On the team's performance in the late innings: I didn't feel any let up by our team. I think their pitcher was on top of his game, he was all amped up to start the thing and he was very aggressive. We started scrapping at the plate in the fourth and the fifth and his team picked him up.
Junior SS Brandon Loy
On facing Kent State P Andrew Chafin: He was able to throw his two pitches for strikes. Coming in with the scouting report we were going to try to lay off his change up and hit the fastball and he happened to be throwing his off-speed for a first strike tonight. It made it tough on us. Like Coach said, we scrapped some runs out but he was good all game and he has good stuff. We will tip our cap to him but we have to find a way to get it done tomorrow.
Junior P Taylor Jungmann
On his tough sixth inning: I fell behind in the count on a couple batters. I got out of rhythm. I think that I really got out of my game on that home run at bat. I threw three breaking balls in a row where I usually try to bust that guy in. And he took advantage of it.
