PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Senior Dylan Frittelli and junior Julio Vegas lead the top-ranked Texas Men's Golf team on the opening day of the 2012 NCAA Championship at Riviera Country Club with a pair of 1-over-par 72s.
The Longhorns finished round one of the 30-team event tied for sixth place after finishing with a 6-over 290 on the day. Alabama leads through the opening round at 1-over, while Florida and Auburn are tied for second place at 4-over and UCLA and Oklahoma share fifth place at 5-over. Individually, the Bruins' Anton Arboleda leads at 4-under 67.
The top-eight teams through three rounds of stroke play will advance to the match-play rounds on Friday. The national champion will be crowned on Sunday, June 3 when the match pitting the final two teams is decided. The NCAA individual champion will be crowned on Thursday pending the conclusion of the final stroke-play round.
Frittelli began his round with a birdie on Riviera's famous par-4 10th hole before carding bogeys on 13 and 15. His second and final birdie of the round came on the first hole, but he bogeyed six to finish at 1-over and tied for 27th place.
Vegas overcame six bogeys with three birdies on 16, two and eight and an eagle on one. He chipped in from 15 yards to record his team-leading third eagle of the year on the par-5 beginning hole at Riviera and followed by sinking a 15-foot birdie putt on two.
Freshman Jordan Spieth narrowly missed adding a third 1-over scorecard to Texas' team total after missing a five-foot par putt on nine - his 18th hole of the day. Spieth's tee shot missed left where it landed in a fairway. His second shot from the bunker was short of the green, and his approach landed five feet above the pin. Spieth is tied for 46th place at 2-over 73.
Junior Cody Gribble matched Spieth's 73 with one birdie and three bogeys for a share of 46th on the individual leaderboard.
As a team, Texas was 6-over on the back nine and even on the front.
Texas tees off in the second of three stroke-play rounds Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. Central alongside second-seeded Alabama and third-see California.
POST-ROUND COMMENTS
Texas Head Coach John Fields
On Texas' NCAA Championship first round: We started on the back today and seemed to get off to an OK start, but then we got backed up, unfortunately. It was one of those days. It could've really gone south, but it didn't. The guys did a really good job of hanging in there.
