AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 17/15 Texas (2-0) racked up 431 yards of total offense and limited New Mexico to 241 yards, as the Longhorns dealt the Lobos a 45-0 defeat Saturday evening before 100,990 at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
The Longhorns' defense produced its first shutout since Oct. 29, 2011, when Texas posted a 43-0 home win over Kansas. Linebacker Jordan Hicks led the Horns with nine tackles (four solo), including two tackles-for-loss. Defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat forced a fumble and recorded a sack, and cornerback Quandre Diggs produced his first interception of the season.
Quarterback David Ash completed 16-of-22 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns and added a touchdown on the ground. Quarterback Case McCoy relieved Ash in the fourth quarter and added a touchdown pass. In his first collegiate appearance, freshman wide receiver Daje Johnson led the Texas receiving contingent by catching three passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Texas forced a New Mexico punt on the game's first possession after a Lobos drive stalled in UT territory. The Longhorns needed only six plays to score on their first possession. Ash found running back Joe Bergeron for 22 yards to the UT 42. On fourth and one from the Lobos' 49, Ash called his own number and raced down the field for a touchdown and a 7-0 Texas lead with 8:50 left in the first quarter.
New Mexico promptly drove into Texas territory before the Longhorns' defense held up and denied the Lobos a scoring opportunity. New Mexico moved the ball to the Longhorns 28-yard line before Jeffcoat sacked quarterback B.R. Holbrook for a 10- yard loss on second down.
Two plays later, UT safety Mykkele Thompson blocked a New Mexico punt, and cornerback Leroy Scott recovered at the New Mexico 40. Texas picked up one first down on the ensuing drive before Nick Jordan converted a 38-yard field goal attempt to give the Horns a 10-0 lead with 13:03 left in the first half.
Texas tacked on another touchdown just prior to halftime after a 35-yard punt return from Diggs gave the Horns the ball at the New Mexico 27. On third and 11 from the Lobos' 28, Ash found wide receiver Marquise Goodwin for 12 yards to the Lobos' 16. A New Mexico sack pushed the ball back to the Lobos' 22, but on third and 16, Ash hit wide receiver Mike Davis for a touchdown and a 17-0 Texas lead.
The Longhorns found the end zone once more on their first possession of the second half. Wide receiver Jaxon Shipley ran 10 yards for a UT first down to the New Mexico 45. On the next play, Johnson took an Ash shovel pass down the right sideline for a touchdown and a 24-0 Texas cushion.
The Texas defense forced a New Mexico three-and-out and gave the ball back to the UT offense, who found the end zone for a third consecutive possession. Bergeron capped an 11-play, 88-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge that staked the Horns to a 31-0 lead with 5:10 left in the third quarter.
Jeffcoat stripped the ball from New Mexico quarterback Cole Gautsche, and safety Kenny Vaccaro recovered at the Lobos' 17. Four plays later, UT running back D.J. Monroe swept left on an end-around and into the end zone from six yards out to stretch the Texas lead to 38-0.
McCoy drove the Longhorns 82 yards on 10 plays and pushed the UT cushion to 45-0 when he found M.J. McFarland for a 13-yard touchdown with 3:02 left in the game.
