NEW ORLEANS -- Senior Desiree Dubreuil matched her career-best 69 Sunday afternoon in the opening round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate to lead the Texas Women's Golf team at English Turn Golf & Country Club. Dubreuil finished the day tied for fourth place at 3-under-par and two strokes behind the first round leader. As a team, the Longhorns are tied for ninth place after turning in a 6-over 294 scorecard.
Playing in the No. 2 position for Texas, Dubreuil started off hot with back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th holes. After six straight pars, she sank her third birdie on the sixth hole and followed with her fourth three holes later on No. 9. Her only bogey came on the par-3 12th hole, her 15th of the day.
Freshman Bertine Strauss also carded a subpar round for the Longhorns and is tied for 15th place at 1-under 71. Strauss' scorecard included two birdies on Nos. 6 and 11, and a single bogey on the fifth hole.
Seniors Madison Pressel and Katelyn Sepmoree and freshman Natalie Karcher are tied at 5-over 77 for 72nd place.
Host Tulane took a one-stroke lead over the 18-team field at 6-under 282. UCLA (283) and Duke (283) are currently tied for second place. Tulane's Emily Penttila holds the individual lead with a 5-under 67.
Due to inclement weather in the Crescent City, tee times were changed from their scheduled split-tee to shotgun starts. Tournament officials have chosen to once again begin with a shotgun start for Monday's second round beginning at 9 a.m. Central.
