LAS VEGAS -- Freshman Brandon Stone led the No. 2 Texas Men's Golf team in Saturday's second round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters with an even-par 72. Stone, one of just 19 players in the field to card even-par or better in the round, jumped 24 places on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 44th place at 6-over 150.
Saturday's scorecards averaged 74.75 strokes per round, just a touch better than Friday's 74.94 average.
Stone shaved six strokes from his second round score after opening tournament play with a 78 in Friday's trying course conditions. Beginning on the back nine, Stone started off par-bogey-bogey-par before he sank his first of four birdies on No. 14. After a third bogey on No. 17 and second birdie on No. 18, Stone made the turn at 1-over where he remained through 12 holes. On No. 4, his 13th, Stone dropped to even with a third birdie attempt. His final five holes began with three straight pars before a bogey-birdie finish to result in his even 72.
Junior Toni Hakula trails Stone by one stroke at 7-over 151 after notching a 74 Saturday afternoon. Hakula had four birdies - all in his final 10 holes - to counter two bogeys and two double bogeys. He is tied for 48th place entering Sunday's final round.
Junior Brax McCarthy (78-76) and sophomore Kramer Hickok (74-80) are tied for 67th, and senior Julio Vegas (77-80) is three strokes back and tied for 76th place.
California (285-280=565, -11) has built a 10-stroke lead over second place Alabama (289-286=575) through 36 holes. Stanford (286-290=576) rounds out the top three in the 15-team field.
Sunday's final round is set to begin at 10 a.m. Central off Nos. 1 and 10. Texas is paired alongside Oklahoma and Georgia and will again start on the back nine beginning at 11:12 a.m.
