TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Texas Women's Golf team shot a season-best 286 (-2) in Friday's first round of the PING/ASU Invitational to finish the day tied for fifth place in the 17-team field at Karsten Golf Course. Seniors Desiree Dubreuil and Madison Pressel carded a pair of 2-under-par 70s and are tied for 11th place to lead the Texas squad in its final regular-season tournament before next week's Big 12 Championship.
Dubreuil and Pressel - the Longhorns' Nos. 1 and 2 players for the tournament - were among 26 players that opened the 54-hole affair with subpar rounds. An additional eight players carded level par on the 6,223-yard course.
Dubreuil notched five birdies, including Texas' only one on the closing hole, but was offset by three bogeys. Pressel's scorecard included four total birdies, but a bogey-birdie-bogey finish put her in the clubhouse at -2.
Senior Katelyn Sepmoree was among the under-par players and her 1-under 71 tied her for 19th place. Sophomore Bertine Strauss and freshman Natalie Karcher finished the opening round tied for 48th place at 3-over 75.
UCLA (279, -9) holds a one-stroke lead over Duke (280), and Southern California (283) and Alabama (284) round out the four teams ahead of Texas.
Duke's Laetitia Beck and Washington's Jennifer Yang share the first-round lead at 5-under 67, and five players are one stroke back and share third place.
Texas is set to being Saturday's second round at 10:40 a.m. Central on the first tee alongside Alabama and UC Davis.
