WACO, Texas - Lawton Langford went 3-for-5 with three RBI Friday as the Baylor Bears opened a Big 12 series with a 6-2 win over the Texas Longhorns at Baylor Ballpark. The Longhorns tied a season high with four errors, leading to five unearned runs for the Bears.
Max Garner (3-4) threw 7 1/3 innings for the Bears (22-20, 9-6), giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Parker French (3-4) took the loss for Texas (22-18, 6-11) after allowing three runs (one earned) on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts. French worked out of several jams as the Bears stranded 10 base runners through the first five innings.
The scoring started when Grayson Porter reached base to lead off the Baylor second on Erich Weiss' fielding error at third. Steve DalPorto drew a walk before both runners advanced on Adam Toth's sacrifice. On an 0-2 pitch, Langford hit a two-out, two-run single to left as the Bears scored first, 2-0.
C.J Hinojosa, Mark Payton and Jacob Felts all singled in the fourth before Collin Shaw hit a ground ball that Langford had some trouble with before retiring Felts at second as Hinojosa scored the Longhorns' first run.
Baylor would make it a two-run lead again in the bottom of the fourth frame as Langford hit a single to right, plating Toth from second. Back-to-back fielding errors to start off the Baylor sixth aided the Bears to score three times for the 6-1 advantage.
Ben Johnson doubled in the Texas half of the eighth and later scored on Weiss' sacrifice fly for the Longhorns' final run of the game.
