AUSTIN, Texas - No. 24 Texas (10-9, 4-1 Big 12) collected singles victories from Breaunna Addison, Aeriel Ellis and Elizabeth Begley, but No. 15 Texas Tech (15-4, 5-0 Big 12) edged the Longhorns by a 4-3 count Saturday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Texas Tech claimed all three doubles contests to capture the doubles point. At first doubles, UT's 16th-ranked tandem of Breaunna Addison and Noel Scott took a 1-0 lead over Tech's 27th-ranked duo of Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo, but the Lady Raiders' duo held and broke for a 2-1 lead. Tech held on to the lead for good and took an 8-3 victory.
Texas' Lina Padegimaite and Annat Rabinovich opened up a 5-2 lead over Tech's Caroline Starck and Elizabeth Ullathorne at third doubles, but the Lady Raiders regrouped and claimed four of the next five games to even the match at six. Tech held serve and broke for an 8-6 win to clinch the doubles point. Tech's Rashmi Teltumbde and Nikki Sanders added an 8-5 win at second doubles over UT's Elizabeth Begley and Aeriel Ellis.
Addison needed only an hour to dispatch Tech's Kilgo at second singles, as the Floridian posted a 6-1, 6-0 win to even the match at one. The 41st-ranked Ellis made short work of Tech's 117th-ranked Adams and posted a 6-3, 6-1 win at first singles to give Texas a 2-1 lead.
The Longhorns extended their lead to 3-1 behind a 6-1, 6-2 win from Begley over Tech's Ullathorne at fourth singles. However, Tech evened the match with straight-sets victories at the fifth and third positions to set up the deciding match at sixth singles.
UT's Lana Groenvynck took the first set off of Tech's Starck, 6-3 and trailed Starck through much of the second set before forcing a tiebreaker. Starck claimed the tiebreaker, 7-1 to force a third set.
Groenvynck broke Starck and held serve for a 3-2 third-set lead, but Starck claimed the next four games to win the set and the match for the Lady Raiders.
Texas hosts Boston University Sunday for Senior Day at Penick-Allison Tennis Center. Two-time All-American Aeriel Ellis will be recognized prior to the match at approximately 11:45 a.m. CT. First serve is set for noon.
