CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Texas Soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Oregon State on Friday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Paul Lorenz Field.
The Beavers' Brandi Dawson scored the game's lone goal in the 48th minute, a header off a Jacy Drobney corner kick, to take the game to its final result. The Longhorns had 13 shots, six of them on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Texas (1-1-1) put pressure on the Oregon State defense early in the game and carried a solid possession advantage in the opening minutes. The Longhorns' first scoring opportunity came in the fifth minute when senior midfielder Gabby Zarnegar caught a cross inside the six-yard box and took a right-footed shot that was saved by the feet of Oregon State keeper Sammy Prudhomme. UT had another shot in the 14th minute when junior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle received a goal kick from Abby Smith and sent a shot toward Prudhomme from 40 yards out that sailed high.
UT earned its first corner kicks in the game the 24th minute. Zarnegar served the ball to junior defender Brooke Gilbert, who got her head on it but sent it wide right. The Longhorns would get two more opportunities to score in the opening stanza, including in the 37th minute when freshman forward Marchelle Davis received an Smith free kick and tapped it to freshman forward Jasmine Hart in front of the goal. Hart collided with Prudhomme and nearly managed to head it in, but the teams entered halftime with no score.
The pace quickened significantly in the second half into a battle to maintain possession, but the Longhorns continued to create chances to get on the board following the OSU goal. Hart had two of the Longhorns' best opportunities, headers near the goal in the 61st minute and in the final minute of the game, that were stopped by Prudhomme.
Smith had three saves in goal for Texas and also took three shots on free kicks, one of which she put on goal. Hart led Texas on the offensive end with her three shots, all on goal.
Texas returns to the pitch on Sunday, taking on the Oregon Ducks in Eugene. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. Central and will also be broadcast by the Pac-12 Network.
