AUSTIN, Texas -- A 21-yard field goal from Nick Rose with three seconds left granted the Football team a stirring 48-45 victory over Iowa State on Saturday night at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
After Iowa State (2-5, 0-4) scored the tying touchdown with 28 seconds left, the Longhorns opted not to wait for overtime when they took over at their own 28. Sophomore QB Tyrone Swoopes uncorked consecutive bombs down the left sideline to receivers Jaxon Shipley and John Harris that covered 39 and 29 yards, respectively. Facing first-and-goal at the 4 with seven ticks left on the clock, Rose was summoned to drive home the decisive kick against the Cyclones in a game featuring six ties and 1,036 yards of total offense. The Longhorns (3-4, 2-2 Big 12) posted a season-best 512 yards on 75 plays.
Swoopes was 24-for-36 passing for 321 yards and a TD, while also rushing for 95 yards on 14 carries and another score. Harris' nine catches for 147 yards were both career bests, while Shipley caught six passes for 92 yards. Malcolm Brown added 72 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Swoopes engineered seven scoring drives and totaled 416 yards of offense, the ninth-best total in school history.
Granted solid field position for its first possession at the Longhorn 48, after Hassan Ridgeway emphatically ended Iowa State's opening three-and-out via sack, the Texas offense needed just 55 seconds to reach pay dirt. Brown started the drive by breaking through the left side for 12 yards, then Swoopes hit Harris for 12 before delivering a 28-yard TD strike on a post route to Marcus Johnson to finish off an impressive three-play, 52-yard jaunt for a 7-0 lead.
With Texas' defense limiting the Cyclones to just 16 total yards over their opening nine plays, Johnathan Gray completed an eight-play, 85-yard drive on a 2-yard touchdown plunge with 7:22 left in the first quarter. Over the first two Texas possessions, Swoopes was a perfect 7-for-7 passing for 108 yards and a TD.
Iowa State's offense eventually sprang to life, answering Texas' quick start with a touchdown of its own as Sam B. Richardson connected on a 4-yard TD toss to E.J. Bibbs with 4:04 left in the first quarter.
Having had little trouble piling up both yards and points, the Longhorn offense was briefly undone by a pair of costly turnovers.
Facing a first-and-goal at the Iowa State 8, on the strength of a 45-yard strike to Harris, pressure forced Swoopes out of the pocket. Scrambling quickly to his right, his throw back over the middle was intercepted at the 1 by Nigel Tribune.
With 14:37 remaining in the second quarter, a pass from Swoopes to Harris was completed but fumbled. Jevohn Miller scooped the ball up at the Iowa State 49 and raced down the right sideline for the game-tying touchdown.
The back-and-forth contest continued unabated as Richardson located Allen Lazard for an 8-yard TD to grant Iowa State its only lead of the night, 21-14 with 10:53 left in the second quarterf. Texas' offense immediately responded with a nine-play, 72-yard drive capped by Swoopes' 9-yard run.
The Longhorns capitalized on an Iowa State mistake when Dylan Haines picked off Richardson and weaved his way through tacklers on a 74-yard interception return for a TD giving UT a 28-21 lead with 2:50 to go before halftime.
The advantage would prove short-lived, however, as a 5-yard touchdown scamper by Richardson, with just three seconds left in the second quarter, dead-locked the contest at 28.
The third quarter couldn't have looked more different from the initial 30 minutes as the defenses began to exert more control over the proceedings.
Texas managed a three-point lead with 4:15 left in the third as an 11-play, 44-yard drive was completed through a career-long, 45-yard field goal from Rose. Iowa State responded just 3:56 later, marching 72 yards in 11 plays as kicker Cole Netten successfully tied the score at 31-all on a 21-yard try.
With 13:02 remaining, the Longhorn defense delivered the big play as Duke Thomas stepped in front of a receiver on the left sideline to intercept Richardson's pass at the Texas 48. Six rushing plays, highlighted by a 24-yard Swoopes scamper and a 1-yard Brown TD dive, covered the 52 yards needed to give the Horns a 38-31 lead.
The Cyclones refused to fold, though, as Aaron Wimberly again brought ISU even by scampering 8 yards into the end zone for the tying TD with 5:24 left on the clock.
On third-and-8 at the Iowa State 26 with under two minutes remaining, Swoopes hit Shipley over the middle and the senior turned the short pass into a 22-yard gain and a crucial first down. Brown followed immediately by rushing over right end for a 4-yard score and a 45-38 advantage.
With one final chance to even the contest in regulation, Richardson delivered in the clutch by finding Bibbs in the back of the end zone on an 11-yard TD toss with 28 seconds left which set the stage for the heroics from Swoopes and Rose.
