Press Conference Quotes
On if it's hard to keep the team sharp when they aren't facing as tough competition: I think first of all, the country is so much more balanced than it's ever been. I think that the challenge for all coaches is to keep their teams mentally and emotionally there night in, night out. That's the challenge with college athletes with traveling, midterms and all the performance they have to go through. With our conference, for yesterday's match against Kansas, they are a very physical team and have the capabilities of playing at a very high level and we knew that. I think the goal is to uphold yourself to a certain standard and if we can do that with our team, then we will be in a good position by the end of the year. There are a lot of barriers that we need to improve on emotionally as well as physically and tactically. We've got a lot of work still to accomplish.
On if they are at the standard that they are holding themselves to: We're not there yet, no. I mean we are playing well at times, very, very well at times. I thought the way we came out last night, or yesterday afternoon, we were very well prepared and they were in a great, confident position. But after the break, we came out not very emotionally and we weren't competing very well and therefore we had 12 or 13 errors and kind of worked a game for them and they played better. Overall, we have to sustain that night in, night out. The first conference match, we didn't come out crisp and ready to play. We had to bounce back and find a way to do that. So it's a younger group, but we have to find some leadership and work on that still. They are understanding that and it's great. That's part of this process.
On trying to make it a point to come out quick: We try to make that a point every night. I think we were really hammering home how important this match was. We do that all of the time and it's the hard part for the coaching staff. Because we keep telling them that this is an important match and then it becomes this bland noise that they hear. The leadership did a good job of coming out and being prepared. I thought we executed at a very high level and we were just good in our routines and just playing systematically and doing the same things over and over again. I thought our setters were really good early on, Khat Bell got us going, we played with a lot of confidence and our defense was really solid, I think we had 24 digs in that first game.
