LUBBOCK, Texas – On a night that saw Malcolm Brown post the first 100-yard rushing game of the season for the Football team, it was the defense that shut down Texas Tech's prolific offense to claim a 34-13 road victory and improve the Longhorns bowl chances.
Brown tallied 116 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns as Texas (4-5, 3-3 Big 12) dominated the second half to pull away from the Red Raiders (3-6, 1-4), who entered the game ranked No. 23 nationally in total offense (483.8 yards per game), but were held to 381.
Texas kept Tech's offense at bay in the final two quarters, holding the Raiders to just 149 total yards and building on a 17-13 lead. Walk-on freshman Vincent Testaverde was limited to 116 yards passing for Tech after coming in to relieve an injured Patrick Mahomes, who was already starting in place of banged up Davis Webb.
While the Texas offense rolled up a season-high 241 rushing yards, the defense took advantage of a pair of inexperienced quarterbacks by posting a season-high 10 pass breakups and forcing five three-and-outs and eight punts in the Longhorns' sixth-straight win over the Red Raiders.
Tyrone Swoopes struck at key times for Texas as the quarterback found John Harris for three long gains to put the Longhorns in scoring position.
After Texas Tech erased a 10-6 lead on Kenny Williams' 6-yard TD run late in the second quarter, Swoopes needed just two plays to put Texas in the end zone. He hit Harris on a career-long 68-yard completion on a perfectly thrown deep ball. One play later Johnathan Gray went up the middle for a 17-yard score and a 17-13 lead with 2:50 left in the second quarter.
Swoopes and Harris connected again late in the third quarter to set up another touchdown. A 35-yard completion gave Texas the ball at the Red Raiders' 39 and from there Gray carried seven straight times to set up third-and-goal from the 4. Swoopes then rolled right and found Shipley in the back right corner of the end zone for the senior's first touchdown of the season, a score that increased the lead to 27-13 with 14:16 left in the fourth quarter.
Swoopes finished the night 13 of 25 for 228 yards. Harris had five catches for a career-high 165 yards.
Brown did most of his damage on the ground in the first half, accounting for 73 yards on 13 carries.
After Quandre Diggs knocked the ball free from Mahomes on a keeper, sending the true freshman to sidelines for the remainder of the game, the Longhorns took over at the Texas Tech 25. Brown then accounted for 20 of the 25 yards on the short touchdown drive that was capped with his 3-yard plunge to give Texas a 10-6 lead with 7:12 left in the second quarter. Brown recorded his 11th career 100-yard rushing game.
One week after getting shut out at Kansas State, the Longhorns got on the board on their first possession of the game. Harris made the first of long receptions, hauling in a 36-yarder to move the ball to the Texas Tech 32. The drive stalled and Nick Rose connected on a career-long 46-yard field goal.
The Red Raiders, however, answered later in the opening quarter when Swoopes fumbled near his own goal line and defensive lineman Branden Jackson fell on the ball in the end zone for a defensive score.
Linebacker Steve Edmond highlighted the defensive performances with a team-high 13 tackles, nine of them solo stops. He also had the lone sack on the night for Texas. Duke Thomas was credited with a career-high four pass breakups.
In his first career start, Mahomes went 13 of 21 for 109 yards. Testaverde, son of the former NFL quarterback, completed 15 of 26 passes, but was intercepted by Mykkele Thompson in the fourth quarter.
