AUSTIN, Texas -- Despite holding No. 6/5 TCU's high-octane offense to a season-low 368 total yards, the Texas Football team was undone by turnovers as the Horned Frogs defeated the Longhorns 48-10 on Thanksgiving night at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback Tyrone Swoopes was 20-for-34 passing for 200 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for a team-leading 61 yards on 15 carries, but tossed four interceptions. Freshman Armanti Foreman proved the top receiving target by posting career highs in receptions (4) and receiving yards (91), including a 73-yard TD grab, for Texas (6-6, 5-4) which saw its three-game winning streak snapped.
Quarterback Trevone Boykin was responsible for three touchdowns, two passing and one on the ground, going 20-for-34 for 233 yards through the air while running for 50 yards on 12 attempts. The Horned Frogs won their sixth-straight game and moved into sole possession of first place in the Big 12 standings.
The Longhorns, playing their final home game of the season, fell behind early and were never able to gain any momentum as TCU (10-1, 7-1) converted six turnovers into 31 points.
Though it was handed short fields on each of TCU's first two possessions, the Texas defense came up with two big stands to hold the Frogs to field goals that saw them take an early 6-0 lead.
Late in the first quarter Texas' offense was driving, crossing midfield before Swoopes fumbled on a third-and-20. TCU defensive end Terrell Lathan scooped it up and raced 40 yards for a touchdown, making it 13-0.
With 10:44 remaining in the opening half, Texas' offense strung together its best drive to that point. On the strength of the quarterback's scrambles of 15 and 11 yards, Swoopes marched UT on a nine-play jaunt that set up a 47-yard field goal from Nick Rose to cut the Horns' deficit to 13-3.
But near the end of the first half, a 38-yard pass down the right sideline from Boykin to Josh Doctson – who had a game-high 115 receiving yards - put the Horned Frogs in business at the Texas 6. Facing third-and-goal from the 4, Boykin located David Porter in the back of the end zone for a TD to make it 20-3 going into halftime.
The Longhorns shut down the TCU offense in the third quarter, forcing two turnovers and two punts, but were unable to capitalize in a scoreless period. An interception by TCU linebacker Paul Dawson late in the third quarter set up the Horned Frogs with great field position, and two plays later Boykin dropped back and fired a 22-yard TD strike to Doctson.
Texas answered back immediately on a 73-yard screen pass from Swoopes to Foreman as the latter caught the ball in the left flat and sprinted untouched down the sideline for a score, cutting UT's deficit to 27-10.
But after a TCU punt touched return man Quandre Diggs on the leg and was recovered by the Horned Frogs at the Texas 19 with 8:14 remaining, they utilized a 10-yard TD rush around left end by Boykin to improve their advantage to 34-10.
TCU added two late scores - one on a 5-yard Aaron Green TD run and the second on a 33-yard interception return from Josh Carraway.
