Two-time All-American Breaunna Addison earns a berth in the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, one of three national championship events on the college tennis calendar
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas two-time All-America senior Breaunna Addison advanced through the semifinals in straight sets and rallied to victory in the final to capture the ITA Texas Regional Championship Monday at Texas A&M's Mitchell Tennis Center.
Addison, who became the first Longhorn to win the ITA Texas Regional singles title since Aeriel Ellis in 2009, advanced to the final Monday with her 6-0, 6-4 win over Rice's Katherine Ip in the semifinals.
Addison took on Houston's Despoina Vogasari later on Monday in the final and dropped the first set, 6-3. However, the 2014 Big 12 Conference Player of the Year overpowered Vogasari the rest of the way. Addison claimed the second set, 6-2 and cruised to a 6-1 third-set win to preserve the Texas Regional singles title.
"I really feel like our group's effort this fall is starting to be evidenced in some positive results," first-year UT head coach Howard Joffe said. "Anyone who has seen Bree play knows that she is as fine an athlete, talent and competitor as there is in collegiate tennis.
"Her tournament win, for me, speaks to her ability to work with all the changes around her and remain focused," Joffe added. "I was thrilled to see she and the Longhorns win the regional for the first time in six years."
A singles semifinalist at the 2013 NCAA Championships, Addison earns an automatic bid to compete in the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the site of the annual U.S. Open. The event is the second of three national championship events on the college tennis calendar.
