AUSTIN, Texas – The first day of action at the Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays featured some of the top combined events specialists in the NCAA as well as a pair of professionals. Two Longhorns were in action and one is poised for an impressive debut in a new event discipline.
Junior transfer Sierra Patrick is competing unattached this year as she transitions from a volleyball player and high jumper at her previous stint at Texas A&M to a heptathlete at Texas. The Austin native currently stands in ninth place through four of the seven events in the heptathlon with 3,305 points. Patrick won the high jump portion of the competition with a clearance of 1.81 meters (5-11.25).
Arkansas' Alex Gochenour leads the heptathlon with 3,757 points. She was the top athlete in the 100 meter hurdles and 200 meters while posting the No. 2 mark in the high jump. Gochenour is coming off a fourth-place finish in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
On the men's side, sophomore Wolf Mahler was looking to ride some momentum from his All-American season indoors. He posted a new personal record in the 100 meters to open the decathlon in first place but was forced to withdraw following the first event.
Two others with ties to the Longhorns were in action in the decathlon Wednesday afternoon. Volunteer assistant coach Miller Moss trains with Head Coach Mario Sategna and finished the day 20th with 2394 points after posting a DNF in the 400. Olympian Ingmar Vos from the Netherlands, who also trains with Sategna, is second after Day 1 with 4,050 points through five events.
Oklahoma sophomore Thomas Cheval is the Day 1 leader with 4,104 points thanks to his second-place postings in the final two events of the day to climb the standings. Cheval finished third in the heptathlon at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
The combined events will conclude Thursday with decathlon beginning its final five events at 10:30 a.m. The final three events of the heptathlon start at 11.
Field events are slated to begin at 12:30 p.m. at Mike A. Myers Stadium and the first running event of the meet toes the line at 4:30. Admission for Thursday is free. Tickets to Friday and Saturday sessions are on sale now through the UT Athletics Ticket Office and on-site at the Myers Stadium Box Office.
More than 7,000 athletes will compete this weekend at the 88th edition of the Nike Texas Relays.
