The Track and Field team will compete in its fourth meet of the outdoor season and second at home on Saturday when the Longhorns serve as hosts to the Texas Invitational, a one-day, team-scored meet. Air Force, Cal State Northridge, North Texas, Rice, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin and UT San Antonio are sending their men's and women's teams. Minnesota will be sending only its men's team. Schools are traveling a varying number of athletes and there will also be a handful of unattached competitors in the field. Field events start at 10 a.m. Central and running events begin at 2:30 p.m. Gates to Mike A. Myers Stadium open at 8:30 a.m. and admission is free.
The Longhorns followed up a strong six-win performance at the 88th Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays (March 25-28) by sending a small group of distance runners to last week's Stanford Invitational. The highly-competitive distance meet produced some of the top times in the nation, including a number from the Longhorns. Texas posted a total of seven marks that rank among the top 10 on the school's performance lists.
Only Harry Green - at the 1988 and 1989 Mt. SAC Relays - has posted a quicker 10,000-meter time by a Longhorn than senior Craig Lutz did at the Stanford Invitational. Lutz crossed the finish line in 28:33.48 to finish seventh in the top section of the event. In a field loaded with All-Americans and a handful of professionals, Lutz was third among collegians in a race that produced the top 40 times on the 2015 NCAA performance list. In the women's 10,000 meters, fellow senior Megan Siebert cut more than two minutes off her best time, finishing 22nd in section one in 33:37.88, a time that ranks No. 3 in school history and 14th on the 2015 NCAA performance list. Sandie Raines impressed for the women's squad in section one of the 5,000 meters. The sophomore transfer from Arkansas crossed the finish line in 15:48.04 to rank as No. 3 on the UT performance list and fifth on this year's national list.
Most of UT's squad will be in action Saturday, though some not in their traditional events. While Kaitlin Petrillose, the 2014 NCAA indoor champion, will compete in the pole vault, the quartermilers will veer off into other events. Courtney Okolo, the defending NCAA outdoor 400m champion, is only slated to run on the 4x100-meter relay and Kendall Baisden, a two-time NCAA champion on the 4x400-meter relay, is scheduled to run both the 100 and 200 meters, along with Morolake Akinosun, who will not run the 100m, just the 200. The freshmen women's sprinters and hurdlers will get a look in a number of events. Ariel Jones (100mh, 400mh, 4x400m relay), Caitland Smith (100m, 200m, 4x400m relay) and Shania Collins (4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, 100m) are penciled in for three events apiece, while Chyna Ries (100m, long jump) is scheduled for a pair.
For the UT men, Senoj-Jay Givans is expected to make his season debut in the 100 meters Saturday and Johannes Hock will compete in three individual events (pole vault, shot put, 110mh) since there will be no multi-events for either the men or women. Ryan Crouser will not take part in his specialty the shot put, but is entered in the discus. Crouser posted the top shot-put mark in the nation - 21.11m (69-3.25) - at the Texas Relays.
