Texas senior goalkeeper Paige Brown makes a career-high seven saves in the loss
AMES, Iowa – A fifth-minute goal by Hannah Cade and a 70th minute score from Taylor Wagner powered Iowa State (8-5-1, 2-3-1 Big 12 Conference) to a 2-0 shutout victory over Texas soccer (7-7-1, 0-4-1 Big 12 Conference) on a chilly and blustery Friday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
For the match, ISU out-shot the Longhorns by a total of 21-20, including 9-4 in shots on goal, while UT led in corner kicks by a 6-4 margin.
Sophomore midfielder Chelsea Surpris and freshman forward Cyera Hintzen guided the Texas offense with four total shots each, including two on frame, while senior goalkeeper Paige Brown made a career-high seven saves in the contest.
Iowa State registered the match's first scoring opportunity during the second minute. Off a cross into the right edge of the 18, midfielder Danielle Moore leapt above the crowd and headed a ball on frame that had to be caught out of the air near the right post by UT keeper Brown.
The Cyclones wasted no time getting on the scoreboard first as ISU nabbed a 1-0 advantage just 4:25 into the contest. A pass from the left wing into the middle by forward Koree Willer ricocheted off a player out front and bounced straight out into the center of the 18-yard box. Waiting to pounce was Cade as the midfielder blasted a shot to the left of Brown from 10 yards out for a quick 1-0 advantage.
Texas began to settle into the match following the Cyclone goal with Hintzen and Surpris each managing blocked shots during the ninth minute. Off Surpris' attempt, the ball deflected into clear space behind the Iowa State backline. UT pounced on the slow roller and scored into the twine, but was denied an equalizer as the official had his flag raised on the far side signaling offside.
The Iowa State advantage nearly expanded to two at 16:01 as Klasey Medelberg took a ball to the right end line, somehow eluded a defender and moved towards the middle. About three yards out from the right post, she fired a shot that Brown somehow managed to deflect away on a big save.
Pushing hard for an equalizer, the Burnt Orange & White continued to pressure over the next few minutes with junior forward Olivia Brook and sophomore midfielder Kayra Dollas each attempting shots from inside the 18 during the 18th minute that were blocked.
A foul call on ISU granted UT a dangerous opportunity on a free kick from 19 yards out during the 25th minute. Senior midfielder Julia Dyche stepped up to the ball and blasted an absolute rocket that deflected off the wall out front before heading out of play over the right end line.
Over the remainder of the opening 45 minutes, each team continued to force the opposing keeper into action. ISU's Kasey Opfer and Brianna Curtis caused saves at 28:55 and 35:10, while for Texas, Surpris made Cyclones net minder Lindsey Hendon work at 33:50.
Freshman forward Tecora Turner caused a little excitement for the Longhorns fans in attendance with 2:41 remaining in the first stanza as her quick turnaround shot from outside the top of the 18 drifted just over the bar before landing on the top netting.
Out of the halftime break, both teams managed solid spells of possession, but it was Iowa State with the most dangerous chance over the opening six minutes. A foul committed by the Horns granted ISU a free kick from just outside the top of the 18. Midfielder Emily Steil stepped up and tried her luck from 19 yards, but her effort drifted a few feet over the crossbar.
Brown came through again with a clutch save for Texas at 53:33 as a Lauren Roeling header was deflected by the keeper to her right before it ricocheted off the left post. A follow-up effort by Danielle Moore proved well high of frame for a goal kick.
The Longhorns nearly located the equalizer they had been searching for in the 56th minute of play as Hintzen battled hard out on the right side before turning quickly and firing a shot on frame. Unfortunately for Texas, ISU's Hendon managed a fully-extended dive to her right to punch the ball away from danger.
UT continued to fire away over the next few minutes as Turner, sophomore forward Katie Glenn and Dollas all tried shots over a stretch from 55:26-57:04 that were blocked, wide and high of frame, respectively.
Hintzen tried her luck again for Texas from the right wing on a quick turnaround shot at 67:00, but her effort from 18 yards out bounced right into Hendon's waiting arms in the center of the goal.
Despite the Longhorns pressure, it was Iowa State that doubled its lead with 20:57 left in regulation. Medelberg again found space just inside the right end line and moved towards the right post. Her eventual cross to the middle found Wagner standing alone about seven yards out, and she finished easily to make it 2-0.
Needing something quickly to get back into the match, Surpris launched a try from 18 yards out for UT at 72:44 that again forced Hendon into a save.
Texas earned a corner kick in the 81st minute, but Dyche's feed towards the back post was successful cleared back out front before being cleared away by Iowa State.
That proved the Burnt Orange & White's last serious opportunity as Iowa State turned away numerous Longhorns offensive forays down the stretch to secure a two-goal league victory.
