Murphy, Dollas, Dyche, Glenn and Adams all reach the goal-scoring column for the Longhorns
AUSTIN, Texas – Behind a five-goal offensive outburst, Texas soccer opened its 2016 spring campaign in style with a commanding 5-2 victory over Monterrey Tech on Wednesday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Longhorns got goals from Morgan Murphy, Kayra Dollas, Julia Dyche, Alexa Adams and Katie Glenn as part of the assault, while UT out-shot the visitors by an unofficial, 15-9 count. The teams decided before the match to play the contest with three 30-minute periods instead of the standard 45-minute halves.
Texas registered the first scoring chance of the match during the second minute as Mikayla Flores teed one up from just inside the top of the 18, but had it blocked wide right of frame for a corner.
It took just 2:29 of match action for the Longhorns to take the lead as a pass to the middle deflected out near the top of the 18. Waiting for it was Murphy, who blasted a drive into the lower left corner from 15 yards out to give the Burnt Orange & White a 1-0 lead.
Monterrey Tech managed its first shot of the day off a long free kick during the sixth minute as a long drive floated in on a bounce but didn't trouble starting Texas keeper Taylor Braun.
The UT advantage nearly doubled in the ninth minute as Adams made a quick dash up the left wing before crossing middle. A marked Flores nearly got to the feed, but it proved about a foot too far in front before rolling over the end line for a goal kick.
The Longhorns did make it 2-0 just minutes later (13:01) as Adams delivered another pass inside the 18. Off a bounce, the ball ended up at the feet of Dollas near the right edge of the box, and she scored routinely from about nine yards out.
Just 3:17 later, the referee raised his flag for a foul on Monterrey Tech inside the 18 and pointed to the spot. Dyche stepped up to take the penalty kick and drove it home for a commanding 3-0 lead just 16:18 into the match.
The visitors managed to pull a goal back at 23:49 as a cross from the left side located forward Maria Fernanda Elizondo to the right side of the frame. She headed it home from five yards out to cut the gap to 3-1.
Braun came up with a huge save with 1:48 left in the opening 30-minute period, stopping a shot at the right post on a dive to preserve Texas' two-goal advantage.
Approximately one minute into the second period, another strong Adams burst broke her in one-v-one with the keeper outside the 18. A collision between the two resulted in a free kick that was delivered to the far post by Dyche. Dollas out-jumped the crowd in front, but her solid header proved wide left of the post.
Monterrey Tech earned its second corner of the contest in the 36th minute, but Texas' defense did a superb job of clearing the ball away.
With 11:58 remaining in the second 30-minute period, Monterrey Tech clawed back within a goal at 3-2. A shot from the left wing was deflected to the back post by Texas substitute keeper Paige Brown. Unfortunately for the Horns, Daniela Solis was waiting there unmarked to score from seven yards out.
Texas restored its two-goal advantage just 3:41 into the final period as Adams delivered another cross into the middle. The ball landed at the feet of Katie Glenn, and she scored through the keeper's legs from seven yards out to make it 4-2.
With 19:57 left in the match, Adams added to a big offensive night with a long distance strike from back near midfield, blasting a lazer over the MT keeper for a more comfortable 5-2 advantage.
It was almost six on the scoreboard for the Longhorns in the 78th minute. Dyche had a chance to shoot from clear space just outside the top of the 18, but her right-footed try drifted just wide left of frame.
Monterrey Tech nearly scored its third with 9:54 on the clock but a lengthy shot was deflected up and off the crossbar by Texas' keeper Brown before being cleared out of danger in what was MT's last real chance to get back in the match.
