Base Knocks:
- Texas junior left-hander Tiarra Davis is off to quite a start to her 2016 campaign, rating second in all of NCAA Division I in total victories with nine. The Henderson, Texas, native trails only Texas A&M's Samantha Show (10) for the top spot in the category in the nation. In the school record books, Davis recently climbed to into a tie for seventh in wins (33) and eighth overall in both career innings pitched (315.3) and career strikeouts (274).
- With a victory at Texas State on Wednesday night, the Longhorns could equal the fifth-best 17-game opening to a season in school history at 15-2. Only the 2013, 2012, 2006 and 2003 teams would have started better over 17 games at 16-1 with the 2011 and 2010 teams putting up 15-2 marks.
- Texas and Texas State have played 44 times in their series with the Longhorns holding a 35-9 advantage over the Bobcats. UT has won the last 12 match-ups dating back to its last loss on March 24, 2010, in San Marcos, Texas, 9-7. The Burnt Orange & White are 13-2 in series play at TSU, winning there last season 10-2 (5 inn.) on April 3, 2015. The return contest in Austin proved much closer on April 4, as UT had to rally for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Texas State, 6-5, as then-senior Marlee Gabaldon had the walk-off single.
- History repeated itself during the Texas Invitational last weekend as Tulsa ended another lengthy Longhorns streak to begin a season. Back in 2013, the Golden Hurricane handed UT its first blemish following a 13-0 start. This season, Tulsa brought an end to Texas' perfect 12-0 opening run with a 3-0 shutout victory on February 26.
- The Longhorns have still yet to taste defeat in a game during which they out-hit their opponent. Through the opening 16 contests, Texas is a perfect 13-0 when out-hitting its opponent and just 1-2 when trailing in the hits column. The only times UT has been out-hit this season were in a 3-2 win over Abilene Christian (February 26) and in a pair of losses to Tulsa (February 26-27).
- The Longhorns have always had a tremendous amount of success against programs from the "Lone Star State," as UT holds a 302-72-1 (.807) overall record versus a combined 20 Texas teams. The Burnt Orange & White leads the all-time series over 19 of those 20 programs with the lone blemish being a 20-20 series tie against longtime rival Texas A&M. The Horns beat Houston (W, 4-1) on Feb. 21 to get this year's "Lone Star State" match-ups underway and took two contests from Abilene Christian (W, 15-1 in 5 inn., 3-2) during the Texas Invitational and still have contests scheduled against Texas State, UTSA, North Texas, UTA, Baylor, UTEP, Texas Tech and Texas Southern to go in 2016.
- Texas has had a great deal of pinch-hitting success thus far this season, boasting a .370 average on 10-for-27 hitting. Junior Mickenzi Krpec leads the way with a .600 mark on 3-for-5 hitting, freshman Bekah Alcozer isn't far behind at .500 on 3-for-6 batting and junior Taylor McAllister is 2-for-4 for a .500 mark.
- Texas has made the "Big Inning" a part of its repertoire right from the start of the 2016 campaign. So far in the first 16 games, the Longhorns have plated at least three runs in an inning 15 TIMES. In fact, UT has posted at least one three-run frame in 11 OF ITS 16 TOTAL GAMES. Showing a flair for late-inning rallies, six of the occurrences so far have come in the fifth-inning or later. The largest outburst thus far was a 13-run fourth in a 17-2 (5 inn.) win over Toledo on February 19, while UT posted three different three-plus run frames in a 13-2 (5 inn.) victory over Ball State on February 19.
- The 2016 edition of the Texas Longhorns has already demonstrated a "never quit" attitude in fighting back from deficits. In all, UT has found itself trailing at some point in eight of 16 games and has successfully rallied back to win SIX TIMES (North Carolina - Feb. 12, North Carolina - Feb. 13, Arkansas - Feb. 13, North Dakota State - Feb. 14, Abilene Christian - Feb. 26, Illinois - Feb. 27). Counting the 2015 season, Texas now owns 19 come-from-behind victories over the last two years combined.
