Longhorns rally from early deficit, put away the Toreros with four singles wins.
SAN DIEGO – No. 19 Texas (11-5) dropped the doubles point but won four of six matches to finish off a 4-3 win over No. 29 San Diego (9-6) Sunday afternoon at Hogan Tennis Center. The win snapped USD's 23-match home winning streak that dated back to 2014.
San Diego won two of three doubles matches to win the doubles point and assume a 1-0 lead, but UT redshirt freshman Julian Zlobinsky evened the score in short order. Zlobinsky dealt USD's Alexandros Araouzos a 6-3, 6-1 defeat at sixth singles to even the tally at one.
San Diego regained the lead with a win at first singles, but UT sophomore Adrian Ortiz evened the match with his 7-6 (2), 6-3 win over Filip Vittek at third singles.
UT freshman Harrison Scott finished off a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over San Diego's 53rd-ranked Jordan Angus at second singles to give the Longhorns a 3-2 lead, but San Diego's Jaan Kononov kept the Toreros in the match with his three-set win over UT senior Michael Riechmannn at fifth singles.
The deciding match came down to fourth singles, where UT freshman Rodrigo Banzer clinched a Texas road win for the second time in two weeks. Banzer defeated San Diego's 118th-ranked Romain Kalaydjian 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-3 at fourth singles to put away the 4-3 Texas victory.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
It was a great match. San Diego has a very good team. It was a hard-fought battle in the doubles, and they played a little better than us at the very end. In singles, we got five first sets, but they kept battling us and battling us. Again, it came down to Rodrigo (Banzer), and he was able to come through and clinch the match.
It was an ultimate team effort today. The attitude of these guys is so good, the culture is so good, and the fight is so good. This team is just continuing to improve. We're really young, but we have a group of guys who just continue to battle for each other. It was an exciting win for us in a really tough situation."
