Longhorns drop the doubles point but respond with four singles wins to seal the team win.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 19 Texas (12-6) earned singles wins from freshman Harrison Scott, sophomore Adrian Ortiz, senior Michael Riechmann and redshirt freshman Julian Zlobinsky to seal a 4-2 victory over No. 27 Tulsa (9-9) on Saturday afternoon at Westwood Country Club in Austin.
Texas has now won eight of their last nine matches, with four of those wins coming against teams ranked 30th or higher in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Tulsa won two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point and a 1-0 lead, but UT's Scott evened the tally at one following a dominating 6-0, 7-5 performance over Juan Matias Gonzalez at second singles.
Zlobinsky took the first set off of Francois Kellerman at sixth singles, 6-4, before falling behind 3-0 in the second. Zlobinsky powered back and wiped out the deficit, holding on for the 6-4 second-set win to put Texas ahead 2-1.
Tulsa's Or Ram-Harel evened the match at two with his straight-sets win over George Goldhoff, but Texas quickly regained the lead after Ortiz won a second-set tiebreaker at third singles to make it 3-2, Texas.
After Riechmann dropped the first set against Dylan McCloskey, the senior stormed back and won the next two sets to clinch the match for the Longhorns. The remaining match at fourth singles featuring UT freshman Rodrigo Banzer against Tulsa's Majed Kilani was suspended.
Texas continues action later tonight against Incarnate Word at 6 p.m. Central at Westwood Country Club.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
On today's match: It was super hard fought. We had some opportunities. We played unbelievably at two doubles. Once again, we came up a little short in the doubles. I thought our backs were against the wall. There was a moment there in the singles where we had some first sets but were down in all the second sets. We were really trying to hang on, hang on, and all of a sudden the last 30-45 minutes, I just thought we stepped up and played really well. I was really proud of what I saw today. I thought the energy was good. It was a great effort by the team and a great win over a really good team.
